I can't remember what you did either, but I don't think it was a full reinstall.
Try IEFix first:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
If you can access some websites and not others it's often because the site's IP address is getting re-routed via the hosts file, IEFix resets the hosts file amongst other things.
Could also be a problem with your ISP's DNS servers in which case there's nothing you can do but wait for them to fix it.

yo cyco.
ive been given a lil job by a mate.
his brief was "it doesnt switch on"
so yippe i thougth.
oh and btw it a lappy.
so i strip the thing to bits.. remove all hardware and with just the battery and motherboard it still doesnt turn on.
do i just assume its proper dead or shall i remove the bios battery and take it from there?
cheers the man who can.

Posted by dude_se
have you tried charging it and trying a new battery. that should be the first step lol. its always the simple things that create big problems. it could be a range of things including a faulty psu
dude_se
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, i agree with dude. It won't be anything to do with the bios battery that's for sure. If you don't have access to a new battery and compatible charger for testing purposes, then you've pretty much had it
Daft as it sounds though, have you put an AVO (electrical testing meter) on the two wires from the power switch to make sure that it's working? Highly unlikely but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen it
If it's still t*ts-up with a new battery and charger and the switch works alright then obviously we're looking at one very expired motherboard
Posted by fatreg
well the battery says it charged with the little button on the side of it...
im going with the motherboard is pooped...
joyous.
cheers guys

@Cyco or anyone
I'm in need of your help as l'm so so desperate.
My pc used to link pretty well with my p800 through docking station and now it can't.This happened after l used AVG antivirus to scan the pc.After the scan l started getting this note"server busy, this process can't complete because the other program....click switch to or retry to..." and then this one pops up"mRouter acces failed".I've uninstalled and re-installed the pc suite a hundred times with no luck! Please help me guys since l can no longer use my pc with my phone!
Posted by Cycovision
Could be a number of things but the first thing I'd try is to turn off all firewalls (including the Windows XP one). I have to have mRouter explicitly allowed in my firewall settings to get my P910 to sync, but that might just be a quirk of my PC!
Next, have a look at your running services. Click 'start', 'run' and type in 'services.msc' without the quotes. Look down the list for anything Sony-Ericsson related and make sure that they are all started.
If you have no joy there, I'd then do a System File Check. Click start, run and type in sfc /scannow. This will make sure that all critical windows files are intact and replace any that are not. You will need your Windows XP disk for this.
If none of those work, you might be looking at a repair reinstall or even a full reinstall of XP
Posted by jmash
I've tried the two suggested options. With no luck.Tell me can installing xp all over again solve the problem?and do you install a OS over the current one,or do l have to remove it first.l've never done that before!

Reinstalling would almost certainly cure the problem. Windows XP has a 'repair reinstall' option that replaces the entire operating system but leaves your currently installed applications and your personal data intact. Only problem is, it doesn't always work
Still, it's worth a try but I STRONGLY suggest that you back up all of your important data first just in case.
What you do is put your XP disk in and boot from the CD to start the setup program. After a while, it'll ask you to press enter to start the setup routine. You'll be presented with the option to either install windows or use the 'repair console'. DO NOT SELECT THE REPAIR CONSOLE! choose the fresh install option and after a while, it'll tell you that you already have a windows installation and offer you the chance to press 'r' to repair it. This is the one you're after!
There's a few things to bear in mind though. Very often a repair reinstall takes out all of your device drivers, just like a fresh install does. Make sure that you have all of your driver CD's handy. Also, you will need your original product key that matches the disk that you are installing from and you will have to visit windows update after the repair reinstall to ensure that your OS is fully patched.

I'm definately gonna try this one out.Thanx a lot man and I will let you know of the outcome!

Im looking for some help buying a pc
I bought my current pc a few years ago when was the best i could get (P4 3.0G with HyperThreading, 1Gb RAM, 120Gb Hard Disk, ATI radeon 9550), at that time I could run almost any app and game available but now i cant run HD Video, games at high graphic detail, and other things.
I would like to buy a new pc able to do those things i cant now, i think i have two options.
- Buy a whole new pc
- Buy a new mother board, rams and processor, case and PSU.
Thats where i need help, what is the best option based on price/reliability, in case your advise is to buy a whole pc, which one? In case your advise is to buy the parts, which ones?
Posted by Cycovision
My advice would be hang on for a little bit longer before upgrading. Reason is, HD-DVD Players, Blue-Ray players and graphics cards that are capable of displaying true HD Video are only just emerging now. They're hard to find and very expensive, however by the end of the year Nvidia's PureVideo HD cards will be much more widespread and no doubt quite a bit cheaper.
I really don't think you'll even need a new processor and motherboard to do what you want. 3Ghz is fine even for today's most demanding games, I think it's your graphics card that is causing the problem.
However, you sound like a bit of an enthusiast and so if you were to buy a new system, here's what I'd suggest you look out for:
-Dual core processor capable motherboard. AMD's X2 processors are my personal favourite, particularly for gaming. Asus and Gigabyte provide a number of good quality DC motherboards with varying aditional features.
-Dual channel memory. At least 2Gb of it to be precise! You can buy Dual channel kits now to make it easier.
-SLI / Crossfire PCI-express capable board. As you know, SLI is the ability to run two graphics cards at the same time. Nvidia (SLI) seem to be a little more ahead of the game is this department than ATI (Crossfire) at the moment. Either way, make sure that the motherboard supports one or the other and buy the cards accordingly. You can't put 2 ATI cards in a SLI motherbaord and get the SLI effect. Also, the cards will both have to be capable of displaying HD Video, so the Nvidia PureVideo series is looking likely.
As I said earlier, personally I'm going to wait until next year before I start playing with this kind of stuff. Mainly because of the cost at the moment but also because Vista will be out at around the same time that the HD Video stuff becomes more mainstream.
Posted by rrojas260
I think you are right maybe i should wait a little longer to buy a top range system, with my current pc i can play 720p HD with less than 5% errors in playback i think and play games at moderate quality.
- Does AGP ports are still used? I remember some guy told me that all new graphic cards only work with PCI express
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, PCI-e is the way to go now. It's also the only way to get SLI or crossfire.

@blu,thanks for recommending this thread.
Hi Cyclovision,I got PC problems more than
problems...
So now,i am facing a problem...
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=127826#post1730748
and i gave it to repair and they replaced the backlight ...But now the colours(colors) are messed up ...the white colour has a pinkish hue.I tried playing around with the settings...tweaking gamma, contrast and brightness..also tried tweaking individual settings of red, green and blue...but no help.
What should i do??Can any settings help or should i take it back to repair?
Posted by Cycovision
I think it needs to go back for repair again
There aren't any settings I know of other than the ones you've tried, so I'd guess that they either haven't repaired it properly or something else has gone wrong with it.
Posted by dr_thug
I talked to the PC guy today...he said that the backlight was at fault so he replaced the entire lcd and backlight unit. When he heard my complaints,he said that some of the settings may need to be changed but it can be done only at the service centre using some softwares they have...so the repair will be done soon.
Thanks Cyclovision for your advice.

Hi Cyclovision,
I am facing a new problem...hadn't used it much since i got my laptop back from the repair...noticed just now that i am not able to use the scroll bar on the touchpad...the scroll is not working...pages are not moving up and down. Can any settings help??
the touchpad for cursor area is working fine.
Btw,my laptop is Hp Compaq nx7010.
Posted by mrao
Umm..thuggie...you should at least spell the big man's name right...its cycovision...without the "l"
Posted by Cycovision
Jenbones insists on calling me cyclovision too, I wouldn't worry about it!
It might be that you need to reinstall the touchpad driver to get full functionality back. You can download the latest driver for your laptop from this page:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/sup[....]hpcpqnk/us/locate/63_6022.html
If that doesn't work, and you can't find any settings dialogue in control panel or the start menu (all programs), then maybe the repair guy damaged the ribbon cable whilst repairing your screen
Anyway, try reinstalling the driver and see how it goes
Posted by mrao
@thuggie .. I thought HP laptops came with this nifty pre installed app called HP update...at least mine did.... it scans for any drivers that need updating, & downloads/installs them from the hp server...alternatively you could manually get them from the hp website...
Posted by Cycovision
@mrao
I think it's all done off the HP website, there is an automatic product identifier and upgrade advisor on their support pages. I've never managed to get it to work properly though so you'll have to tell me the secret
Posted by dr_thug
Apologies Cycovision for writing your 'name' wrongly
@Cycovision,
For me,Installing drivers are big deal and am afraid that i might mess up things.i will leave them to the service guys.

looking for some advice on laptops. got two in mind that suit my budget and needs. one has a pentium m 735a, the other a sempron 64 3200+.
now i know very little about processors in laptops so ive no idea which will perform the best given the rest of the specs are almost identical.
any help greatfully recieved
Posted by Cycovision
There's not alot in it to be honest. The strengths and weaknesses of both chips kind of cancel each other out if you know what I mean, meaning that they're both going to perform pretty much the same.
I guess that since the sempron is a true 64 bit processor, it might be an idea to go with that simply in case you wish to upgrade to Vista in the future. It's possible that with a 64 bit capable OS running, the sempron might outperform the Intel but even then I think the differences won't be astonishing.
However, I must admit that I'm guessing here. I haven't come across any reviews that test both of those chips head-to-head, although I have built desktop machines using sempron 3200s and they were more than fast enough for general use i.e. surfing, office stuff, video playback etc.
Posted by slattery69
cheers cycovision, ive always used amd myself when build a pc so i get a bit lost with the intel stuff.
the sempron a touch cheaper so might as well save my pennies for some thing else like a bag to put it in

Hey mate, need some help here.My pc is not playing any audio.ive checked my drivers, uninstalled them re-installed em but still no luck.when i open volume control,it says'no active mixer devices available,to install mixer devices,go to CP,and use add new hardware'.But all drivers that used to be there are listed.
Apparently all this happened after i did a sys restore some days ago.Although all my other hardwares working perfect, audio is dead.
And one thing else,if i reconnect my speakers and mic,Soundmax does recognize them, but after i set them up its again the same story.
Any suggestions??
Posted by Cycovision
Very strange! Starting with the obvious, have you gone to Device manager and checked that the audio device is not disabled? I'm just thinking that even if the drivers are in ok, it won't work if the device is disabled in windows?
Posted by deepsme
While waiting for ur reply i un-installed and re-installed the drivs yet again. No luck.
Posted by deepsme
Adding to my post above, could there be a prob with my sound card??
Posted by Cycovision
Hmmmm, I'm not sure to be honest. It's obviously something to do with system restore, I've never liked it!
Will it let you restore to an earlier or later date than the one you already have?
Failing that, a repair resinstall using the XP disk might be worth a try?
Posted by deepsme
Well i've tried to restore to an earlier date, but the bug with that is my pc suddenly restarts on its own during the restore process.
Same thing happens if i scan my registry with reg mechanic.
coming back to the audio prob, sound card failure maybe??
Posted by Cycovision
Yep, it's beginning to look like that. Certainly worth trying a different sound card if you can get hold of one just for testing. It could even be the hard drive since that can often cause reastarting in XP. Have you tried a checkdisk? If that hangs or causes the PC to restart, it can be a sign of a dodgy hard drive.
Posted by deepsme
Scandisk seems to be working fine.Difficult to find a spare sound card but will try if a os reinstall dont solve the problem.Maybe the restarting could simply be because of a virus or something.Unfortunately i dont hve spare time until weekend to do all the backups before the re-install
OK before i do that, tell me if there's a way i can uninstall these-
Legacy Audio drivers
Audio Codecs
Legacy video capture devices
Media Control devices
Video Codecs
None of these have the option to uninstall from device manager except for the Soundmax integrated audio driver
Posted by Cycovision
No, you can't uninstall those individual devices since they're integrated into the main audio driver
Try the repair reinstall first though, it's worked for me in the past with driver problems.
Posted by deepsme
ok,will get back to you after i try that.Thnx for the help.
cheers.
Posted by blu_6779
@deep, are you using onboard sound? There's an option to enable/disable it in the bios, though not sure if that can be effected by a system restore.
Posted by deepsme
where can i check it in bios?
Posted by blu_6779
i think it comes under a category called "peripherals?"
