Id say go for a dual core and upgrade the mobo to 945 .
and if ur budget allows, add more ram and a seperate video card.

right i got microsoft office xp on my desktop and i aint on my laptop , dont have office on a disk so how the hell i get it on laptop? Cheers .
Posted by thami
As far as i know its not possible scott you got to have it on a cd to install it on a new pc even a laptop. So basictly you need to get down to pc world and buy a OEM or what ever it is your after.I might have miss understood you thou if you have it on a file not actually installed then mabe there is some thing you can do about it probably burn it onto cd using nero.I must stress the copy must have been purchased first not downloaded free.If you would like to know how to burn it and get an Image to use just post your questions or use google probably be better of with google really.

isnt the 945 motherboard a lot more costlier? With a 915 intel and 2x512mb ram , wont that suffice for playing all the games i want?
Posted by mrao
Not necessarily...while the 915 will run most games...but is reported to have errors with some...check this out
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel915g/sb/CS-011967.htm?iid=graphics+915main&
Posted by shyam335
945 shouldnt be a lot costlier, since its a mainstream board. and 945 has a faster graphic core, which should help gaming (I dont recommend integrated graphics at all for gaming),anyway make sure that the mother board u buy has a pci-e slot which will help future upgrades for graphic part.

I can't seem to sign into my MSN messenger or Sign into my hotmail account....can someone please help me out with this?
The Error message that i'm getting is \"Default gateway\" ...i have no idea what that means?
Posted by Gigs
@blue Priced up an AMD board and chip? Here at least the cost of an AMD + board would see you being able to buy a low-mid end graphics card to go with it opposed to an intel and baord. For most things however onbaord graphics will do fine, just don't expect too mucth out of games.
@p900: re your my documents icon, iirc right click on the desktopm goto properties, and I think its in the desktop tab itself that you can go through and change the icons for My Documents. BTW that one you have is the default. Me, I use a product from Stardock called Iconpackager, lets you basically "theme" all your icons into nice sets or mix n match.
@axxxr: version of msn? do you immeadiately get "default gateway" on opening messenger, or is there a little more to the error message?

Its version 7.5 ..No i don't immedietly get that error \"default gateway\" its only when i run the automatic trouble shoot, its listed as one of the errors.

do you have internet shearing i think you have a problem with the gateways have a look at your internet connections and try to renew the connections. If you have only one pc connected to the internet (not networked) then i would check the settings and try to renew the ip address most of the time a gate way problem would be for networked pc shearing a internet connection. But the broblem is defo you connection and not msn or software so try and sort your modem conection out.

basically your renaming teh file yeh?
cheers again mate
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, you've got a worm:
O4 - HKLM..Run: [rock] rock.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [intell321.exe] C:WINDOWSsystem32intell321.exe
What antivirus are you runing?
Also, what's this windows defender thing? is it an antispyware app? Sorry, I'm a bit busy right now so I can't go looking things up! I'll be back in about an hour or so

the windows defender is a antivirus-spyware tool (which we installed today)
We are running Macafee full version (version 4) but Macafee only reconizes the spyware probelm and doesnt remove it...
No worries about being busy matey, i can wait
Posted by Cycovision
Right, well macafee is, shall we say, not my favourite AV app....
I'll find the manual removal instructions for you and post 'em here. Have you tried the other spyware removal apps such as Adaware and Spybot S+D?
Posted by leeboy13
cool, yeh i agree about macafee... but its work and they get it throught the office...
We have tried everything like spy-bot and adware se etc..... still no luck
Did you see that forum? it had this in it:
' have figured out how to fix this one. McAfee will find it but NOT fix it.
1. boot-up in Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt
2. rename the wininet.dll to wininet.old
3. reboot to normal windows
4. when logged in, select the homedrive:/windows/system32/wininet.old and run Virus Scan on it. McAfee WILL then CLEAN it.
5. rename wininet.old to wininet.dll and reboot.
all's well now with no McAfee errors found and no annoying messages.
best of luck '

hope this helps? waht you reckon about that? but surely i see it as the probllem remains youve only 'ttricked' the pc into thinking its not there... am i right?
Anyhoots thanks so far and i hold my breath with regard to your squiral
Cheers

Yeah, it's kind of a trick. The idea is that by renaming the file and rebooting, the registry will try to load up the original file (.dll) and not be able to find it.
Mcafee can then deal with it because the program is not running. This is why it's always a good idea to do virus scans in safe mode, since many viruses canot be healed or deleted if they are actually loaded into memory.
That suggestion is well worth a try, in fact it might be the manual removal instructions that I still haven't got round to digging out yet

lee

You can use either 'ren' or 'rename'
ren winnet.dll winnet.old
Posted by leeboy13
k mate.. tried that..... couldnt change the name so i went and loaded wininet.dll and it said to choose a program to run it... i used this menu to change the name from wininet.dll to wininet.old. sadley thsi didnt work tho coz when i started up teh pc it said explorer could not load due to missing file wininet.dll
so i wnet back to teh beginning and renmaed it back... still problem
any suggestions mate?
when im in command prompt and i enter:
ren wininet.dll wininet.old it simply says no file etc..... but the line reads:
c:/documents and settings/cath/ ................. <- this is where i type 'ren wininet.dll wininet.old'
any ideas
Posted by Cycovision
Ahhhh, yeh! You need to specify the path to where the file is located, or change to that directory first.
e.g. if the file is in c:\\windows\\system32, you need to type:
cd c:\\windows\\system32
before you type
ren wininet.dll wininet.old
I forget to tell you that
Posted by leeboy13
woohoo... changed fine this time...
although when windows reboots after login i get the following message:
'this application failed to start because of teh missing file wininet.dll, please reinstall the application......
and it gets stuck on a blue screen.... (explorer aint loaded)......
i can go back and rename the file back to wininet.dll and it will load up but have a virus... any ideas?

See if it'll reboot in safe mode and then use hijack this to take out the r4 - HKLM/run........ line for wininet.dll. This should (hopefully) stop windows trying to load the file at startup.
Posted by leeboy13
mate i cant see one liek the one you said
there is no file in hijackthis with wininet.dll
have a look above at my hijactthis log
Posted by Cycovision
Ok, something else must be trying to load it in.
These two can go:
O4 - HKLM..Run: [rock] rock.exe
O4 - HKLM..Run: [intell321.exe] C:WINDOWSsystem32intell321.exe
and also the CTFMON entry a little further down.
Have you tried running a macafee scan in safe mode?
Posted by leeboy13
k matey, i removed those files , igotta go now tho office shutting
But i will carry this on monday mate...
Cheers for teh help tho

How can i see what wifi things are conected to my main pc?
Posted by p900 lover
Oh and also can i send files from my main PC to a laptop via Wifi?
Posted by Cycovision
If your PC has a wifi card installed with the drivers and it's all working ok, there is usually an icon in the system tray (near the time) that notifies you when wireless networks or devices are detected, connected or disconnected.
To transfer files wirelessly, you need to run the wireless network connection wizard on both the PC and the Laptop. The wizard can be found in 'my network places' and the control panel.

System Memory: 512MB (min), 1GB (rec)
Graphics card: DirectX 9 capable (min), Runs Windows Aero (rec)

A couple of Qestions for you, o wise one:
- When opening a hyperlink in Internet Explorer, the new page always opens in half-size. Can I set it to open in full-size or am I destined to always click the full-size icon every time I open a link.
- When I highlight a piece of text and click EDIT > COPY and later paste it somewhere, does Windows store every piece of text permanently on my Hard Drive? Can I access these text snippets to archive some and delete others?
Any help much appreciated!

@carkitter
IE is supposed to remember the size of the window that it had when you last closed it, but it doesn't do it very well
New windows opened via hyperlinks can have a size dictated by the site itself, if it doesn't specify a size then the window will open in the standard small size that you're seeing. You can probably change this via the registry, but I don't think there's an easy way to set it to open in full screen, I don't recall seeing a setting anywhere in IE for it anyway although I may have missed it.
As far as I know, the default clipboard doesn't save everything that you've cut or copied. Usually it just uses a set-aside area of physical memory to store the clip data and overwrites whatever was there before. However, I did read somewhere that it does also use a temporary file with the extension '.clp', but I don't think it contains everything you've cut or copied.
Some versions of M$ Office install a more sophisticated clipboard that does remember multiple items, but again it uses memory rather than a file wherever possible and I think it only kicks in when you're using one of the Office apps.
There used to be some freeware apps around that provided a much better clipboard, they probably do offer the functions that you described. Might be worth a quick google?

Help!
On advice from an aquaintance, I downloaded Windows Live Messenger which crashed my computer.
I've only been able to restart it in 'Safe Mode with Networking' whatever that is. The result is that it now is stuck in windows Classic Style (800 x 600 resolution) with none of the XP graphics and doesn't Hibernate or Restart properly.
Any advice much appreciated.

After letting my notebook rest for a couple of days, it has returned to normal. Perhaps the System Restore has finally kicked in. For some reason IE is opening in full screen now, so there's one postive thing from this stressful episode.
@ Cycovision, thanks for the earlier advice.
Edit: Doh! Crashed again! It's back to safe mode.

eCyco or anyone l'm in desperate need of your help.My pc won't switch on.I tried to launch the TV application and a the comp tells me no card capture. So l switched off the pc using the power button(I always use the mouse to switch off).Try to switch it back on and it won't switch on.
The only thing that happens is the green & red light on the case do light up when l press the power key to switch on,but nothing at all comes on the monitor. The system does not start up at all,and when l press the power key to switch off it does not respond and l have to unpluge it from the socket.Kept trying and it eventually switched on and it said(the system failed to reboot several times and instructed me to go to BIOS,but before l could go there it was working ok.
Then l shut it down.It showed the windows is shuting down note and it froze right there and l had to unpluge it to shut down, and now it won't start, back to that problem.
Can you please help me!!!
Posted by Cycovision
One possibility is that you've got a broken card somewhere, and from what you said about the TV application failing to recognise the TV card, it might just be that.
So the first thing I'd do is remove the TV tuner card and see if the computer starts up without it. If the TV tuner is combined with the graphics card however, you might have a problem... The PC won't start up without a graphics card anyway unless it also has onboard graphics.
I usually advise people with this kind of problem to take the PC to a repair shop. This is simply because in order to diagnose the fault, you very often have to remove various bits one by one and replace them with known working components, the so-called 'swapping out' process.
So unless you have access to a few different components, you know what they all do and are comfortable working inside a computer, I really would take it to reputable PC repairer.

Thanx man for your advise.I did phone a friend who used to work for a computer centre,l'm expecting him later this afternoon.I will let you know of the outcome.
Before l forget l did remove the TV card, the 2 rams, and put the rams back and left the TV card, with no luck.
Thanx again!

Bit of a problem on my pc, when I first boot it, it posts fine (finds hd’s and all ram and that) then when I get to the windows xp loading screen there’s a loud siren noise coming from the motherboard (I think).
After playing around I noticed that I can get the siren noise to stop if I restart, enter the bios, don’t change anything but still save and exit.
Only thing I’ve done which maybe connected with the siren is that I took out the cmos battery and put it back in again (didn’t change it).
Any ideas?
Posted by Cycovision
When you took the battery out and put it back in , BIOS probably loaded it's default settings on the next startup. This might have set the alarms for fan speeds and temperatures. First thing to do is go into BIOS and have a look in the temperatures and alarms menu. The location of this menu varies according to the BIOS manufacturer so you'll have to hunt around.
