ide hdd's are easy to install. theres 2 sets of wires. one goes into the motherboard and one goes into the power supply if i remember correctly. then you get the bios to reconise htem if it doesnt automatically and just install windows

hi im looking at computers on ebay and noticed theres a difference in price if it has a AMD Athlon processor to if it has a pentium 4 processor, is there much difference between them and would it be noticeable?

Im looking at these 2 sysytems:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ATHLON-[....]tegoryZ179QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PENT-IV[....]tegoryZ179QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the graphics card is also better in the athlon system, which sysytem would be best for high end games like call of duty 2 and would they both play it easily? thanks guys

I'm not going to get into the old AMD vs Intel war here, I really have no preference for either chips and the majority of users will notice no difference in performance between the two.

The reason I say this is because AMDs and Intels use completely different architectures to achieve the same goal and it's only when you start benchmarking that the minor differences start to show up. People will argue with me over this point, feel free, I won't be taking part in the debate!

The general consensus is that AMD systems are better for gaming whilst Intels are better for applications that require repetitive mathemetical calculations such as video editing and high quality graphics rendering (CGI stuff like animated films, not gaming).

Whether you choose Intel of AMD, the important things to remeber are:

- Don't go for the fastest processor you can afford at the expense of Memory and a graphics card. When it comes to gaming, it's worth getting a reasonable processor and a slightly better graphics card than the other way round. Memory is everything, you need at least 512Mb in a gaming rig, 1Gb or more is ideal.

- Don't think that a graphics card with highest amount of memory is the best. Most modern games are designed to utilise 128Mb of GPU memory as default, extra memory only allows you to whack the quality settings up a little, it doesn't really improve framerates. It's the GPU core speed and memory access speeds that make the difference.

- If possible, buy a seperate sound card too. Just like on board graphics, on board sound is inefficient and uses a surprising amount of your PC's resources. It doesn't have to be a fancy one, even a cheap card will help boost performance.

- The processor's L2 cache is VITALY important. A processor running at 2.2 GHz with a 1Mb cache will run faster than a 2.2GHz processor with a 512Mb cache, regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel.

i find amd 64 processors realllly fast compared to intels that ive used, i can play counter strike source on nearly the highest settings at 1152x864

Posted by dude_se
my amd sempron 3000 is going strong. i personally prefer amd but as cyco said they are both as good and the differences only occur when you do more ocmplicated things on the pc. ive just always had an amd and have never had any big problems

cheers cyco, that was a great help, iv been searching for intel processors but im glad i asked you about it as AMD processors are cheaper so i can put a better graphics card with it. thanks again!

@dude_se - can you play high end games easily on it? thanks

Posted by dude_se
well i can play max payne 1 perfectly. absolutely no slowdown and perfect graphics. aint really tried any others but the machine seems very capable

Posted by Cycovision
It's definately a java problem. Daft as it sounds, have you tried clearing your temporary internet files and downloading the applet again?

There's a few other things we can try, I'll post 'em later because I've got to go out and mend a computer now

most likely. Click here to learn more about that hoax virus...

@cycovision: i'm having problems with my proxy server settings. because our company changed their proxy server address, i also have to update the settings in my internet explorer browser. it is updated, but for some reason, when i restart my PC, the old proxy server setting is restored, overriding my previous manual setting of the new proxy server. the same thing is happening to my colleagues' PC. it doesn't do anything harmful, but it is really annoying, as i have to re-enter the settings everytime i turn on my PC. is it an IE bug? or a new virus? do you have any idea what's causing this? thanks a lot...

got a pc, no hard drive but everything else.

Now is there any way i can find out how much RAM its got, will it say it somewhere ?

A pic attached.

Thanks

Also anyone got a cheap flat screen monitor they wanna sell me

Posted by slattery69
since youve no hard drive than you ll have to take each stick of ram out and they should have a sticker on saying what size they are. unless its cheap ram and it may not.
another way is to find out what mother board it is then look to see what ram it takes and the configuration which may offer a clue

Posted by k750irage
If its a pentium 3 and below motherboard it will use SD ram. The usual amount is 128 mb. If p4 it will use DDR ram usualy 256 mb. But yeah ther definitly should b a stickr on it 2say wat size it is. Hope it helps.

Ok, I've got a PC problem now!

We've got a basic PC at work which came with WinXP on it. We promptly wiped that and installed Linux on it for testing purposes. Now we want to go back to WinXP.

I've got the original bootable install CD that came with the PC, but it refuses to start-up from it properly.

I've set the boot order in the BIOS thing to use the CD-ROM first. It comes up with a message:

"Press any key to boot from CD"

which I do, then this message comes up:

"Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration"

then the screen goes blank, the CD spins a bit then absolutely nothing else happens!

Any ideas?

The CD worked before we installed Linux as I partitioned the drive initially and re-installed Windows, so the CD should be ok.

@jools, set boot order to floppy first, CD second, get a boot floppy from another PC, it will def give u a prompt. did u get rid of all the partitions made for linux?

Posted by brownlad007
the java problem has magically fixed itself :/ . dont know how

Posted by Gigs
@Jools:

You could also try setting the bios for fail safe defaults, then setting the boot order with the CD-ROm first.

If it "freezes" try pressing the caps key to see if the computer has infact frozen or if its just old and slow

@cyco or anyone who knows, I have had a problem with my internet for about a week now, i have not changed any settings. Since a week ago i cannot connect to the esato website when i am at home... The page either doesnt load or i get the lil x boxes where all the pics or banners are.... But when im in work (like now) it works fine??? im puzzled, i had the same prob a few years back with another site and a windows reinstall solved the prob but i really want to avoid that at all costs as i dont have the time to do it...

Anyone shine any light on this lil bugger?

As ive said i have not chnaged any settings so it shoule be nothing to do with anything i could potentially manually change...

By the way im on NTL (i know theyre poo, but they are all i can have )...

Thanks everyone!

Posted by Cycovision
Is it just esato or does it happen with other sites as well?

If you've already cleared the cache and it hasn't helped, you can try these two fixes:

Winsock fix: http://www.webattack.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

IEFix: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Posted by leeboy13
cheers, i will try them when i get home

It appears to be only esato not loading but i have had a few sites where the pics have been 'x' boxes aswell....

Thnaks for the advise cyco

@Cycovision why does my documents folder look like this?

Posted by Cycovision
Looks exactly the same as my 'My Documents' folder! That's the default windows xp icon for the standard XP style theme, isn't it

Windows sees it as a special shortcut, like 'My Computer' and the Recycle Bin and as such it gets it's own icon. Unlike ordinary shortcuts, I don't think you can change the icon for My Docs without using a registry hack or a XP theming application, but don't quote me on that

If you don't mind, P900, I'll take this oportunity to say my goodbyes. I'm off to Goa again for a month so take care all and I'll 'see' you all soon

Posted by leeboy13
have a fab time! and thanks for all the help cyco

Posted by p900 lover
I think you can because i only realised it was different a few days ego, b4 it was the same. But dont worry have a great time in Goa and "see" you back in a while.

Thanks 4 all the help

what will u be using it for?

Posted by BlueQuill
Web surfing, music, gaming, data work....mainly i will be indulging in multitasking...for eg. work on a presentation, check email and listen to songs at the same time...

Posted by BlueQuill
Where are the pc gurus?? Or is this forum dead?

Posted by p900 lover
I would say try and upgrade the RAM to 1GB if you want 2 be doing lots of multi-tasking and if ur going to be saving lots of dats 80GB might not be enought
