hey cycovision!

nice job you're doing here...i need help!

my bloody vaio isnt playing dvd's!!??? ive got a dvd re-writer (2 drives) and neither drive wants to play and dvds, ive tried windows media player, powerdvd and sooo many others...

please help (model is: RS322E)

Posted by Cycovision
Ok, first question, did it used to play them ok or has it never worked?

Second question, are you trying to play DVDs with a different region code than your drives / software is set to?

Third question, can it read data dvds ok?

Posted by Kwiksta
1) yes

2) no

3) yes

Posted by slattery69
are these discs that youve used before or new ones also are they +r/-r
just a though if your trying to use a media that may not be support or that some discs aint liked by some drives even if they are compatible.

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, I was just gonna ask is it only certain movies?

Have you installed anything recently, between the time when they did play and didn't?

Posted by blayv
1.what's the difference between -r and +r and which are better (+r are somewhat cheaper here). 2. what are your experiences with dvd-rw, are they worth buying?

Posted by Cycovision
@blayv

The main difference is DVD-R is compatible with about 93% of all standard DVD players whereas DVD+R is compatible with about 83%.

This means that if you intend to use your DVD-RW drive to make movie disks to play on a standard (not a computer) DVD player, or other people's computers then you should go for DVD-R.

If you're only interested in making DVDs for use on your computer, you can get away with just a DVD+R burner.

In terms of ease of use performance and reliability, there's no difference between the two formats

Posted by slattery69
theres not a load of difference between the one write +r and -r just different formats really technically there will be differences but for mere mortals putting films or data there aint much to chose execpt burn times possibly
dvd rw either + or - are just re recordable meaning like a video tap if you dont want whats on the dic you can record over it. however different discs are better than others i used some phillips +rw recently your supposed to be able to record over then 1000 times i got about 4 before they started becoming unreadable or showing surface glitches.
like a lot of things in life you get what you pay for.
if its to cheap it will have corners cut to expensive they are just out to make a buck

Posted by Kwiksta
theyre normal dvd's which ive purchased from hmv, like kill bill etc

Posted by rrojas260
@solidsingh

Just to know, do you have creative speakers?

Posted by Cycovision
Urgh! this is a nasty one

So exactly what happens when you try to play them? does the app (power DVD, media player et.,) not start at all? Does it hang? Or does it play but you get crap on the screen?

@ tempsonyfreak

I would reccomend removing all the DVD players etc you have installed, and any codecs that you have installed and do a fresh install, you may have codec conflicts.

Just use the K-Lite codec pack, and windows media player or VLC player.

Posted by rrojas260
Check if DMA is activated.

Now, i have my own problem. Im trying to set up a personal network but when i go to My network places and select "view computer on my work group" sometimes i can see only my own computer but in the other pc i can see both. This happends in my 3 pcs at home and doesnt seem to be anything to fix it.

Im using XP on all pcs, Wired lan or wiress lan (i cant make it work using wired or wireless), All the pcs are in the same work group.h

Posted by Cycovision
Sounds like the problem PC sometimes struggles to get an ip address assigned on DHCP.

Next time it happens, click 'start', then 'run' then type in cmd. At the command prompt, type in ipconfig and press enter. This'll show you if your network adapters have been assigned an ip address and default gateway. If it hasn't, type in ipconfig /renew (enter) and see what happens.

Setting the network properties on all three computers to use fixed ip addresses may help.

Posted by rrojas260
But if i have internet in all pcs, wouldnt i have to let my ISP to asign the Ips?

Posted by Cycovision
No, there's two basic settings. The ip address of each computer, and the default gateway, which is sort of the 'route' to the internet. It's usually either the ip address of your router, or the ip address that your isp assigns.

If you do ipconfig on one of the machines that is working ok all of the time and note the ip address of the default gateway, then you can manually enter that address in the appropriate field of the network properties dialogue when you assign ip addresses to each individual computer.

To be honest, it sounds like an Operating System problem, bearing in mind that the computer struggles with both wired and wireless networking.

Posted by Kwiksta
windows media player says something about a codec, and the same thing happens for all the other dvd players...

Posted by slattery69
sorry did you say you have tried uninstalling them and reinstalling them.
strange it should as for a codec if its dvds as mpeg2 decoder should be there. could understand if they were divx films or something like that.
i know it probably wont help but have you tried media player classic by gabest.org
it will play anything thrown at it if that does nt work have you tried updating microsofts media player see if that can add some codecs that appear to be missing

one more question, my cordless mouse has packed up so now im using my 1st ever mice the i got.
iv looked at pc world, and not sure which 1 2 go for. any ideas?

has to be wireless, thats about it. also the keybord i have at the moment is also wireless, will it interfer with my new mouse or not?

Posted by solidsingh
dont get a cheap one if you play games

Posted by dude_se
u tried changing batteries of your wireless mouse

dude_se

Posted by Cycovision
Not what you want to hear, but I'd strongly suggest you need a wired mouse. Why has it GOT to be wireless?

There's a very good chance that a wireless mouse could have issues with a wireless keyboard from a different make / package. Apart from the radio side of things, you're gonna have at least one more driver on there which, knowing good old M$, could cause problems.

But my advice would be to keep the wireless keyboard and get a good wired mouse to go with it.

But if you must have a wireless one, price is the indicator. Don't pay less than £30 UK for one.

Yup wireless mouses are useless for gaming becasue of poor refresh rates especially in the latest fps games. Just get yourself a top class optical mouse instead.

Try the Microsoft optical blue for around £15

OR

If feeling adventurous and wealthy the Razor copper head will do you fine

Posted by p900 lover
Yup i changed the baterys, lol but good point.

It doesnt HAVE to be wireless, but it would be nice.
The thing is that i dont really play any games, so im not sure.

I might just get a whole new board and mouse, and sell this keyboard.

Posted by p900 lover
where did u get it from????

@Cycovision is it 100% definate that it will interfere with my wireless keybord?

Posted by dude_se
depends on the makes.
i got it from pc world not long ago. never failed on me.

dude_se

Posted by p900 lover
if got a microsoft wireless keyboprd at the moment.

Posted by Cycovision
No, it's not 100% definate that it will interfere with your current keyboard. Trouble is, it's not 100% definate that it won't

Chances are, it would be fine. But I still really do suggest that you go for a wired mouse. Opinion on them is split 50-50 and I must admit that one of my PCs is running with a wireless mouse with very few problems at all.

But that's the point. The wired mouses (mice?) on the other PCs run with NO problems at all.

hey, on the back of my subwoofer/amp for my pc i have an " aux in " connection and its a 3.5mm jack. if i got a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead, could i plug one end into my psp and the other into the pc speakers and listen to music from my psp on the pc speakers?

3.5mm lead

Posted by Cycovision
Yup, should be ok

Just make sure that you turn the volume on the psp right down, then increase it gradually to avoid damaging the pre-amp on your speaker system.

great! 5.1 surround on my psp!

Posted by Cycovision
I don't think it'll be 5.1 surround, but it should certainly sound pretty good!

Got a strange problem with me pc. Started running really slow then the other day it went though the post but wouldn’t start windows something about not being able to read the HD not a problem a fresh windows install was due (like to do this every 6 months and it was due).
As it said something about the hard drive I put a new formatted one in installed Windows + SP2, Norton Virus thingy and the other essential crap. But for some reason it runs really slow like before.
But I tired to load a game (COD) and the pc froze at the loading screen so I reset the pc and it started working fine again (improved speed). This speed has now slowed again .

I’ve checked for virus installed updated and run ad-aware + spybot thingy.

Any ideas for this sudden speed decrease.

(2ghz emachine pc, 80gb HD, 1024mb ram, 9800 pro)

Posted by Cycovision
Did you say that you used a new hard drive? If you didn't, it could be that.

First thing I'd do is disable norton at start-up to see if that's the culprit (it often is)

Click start, run, type in msconfig

In the msconfig window, click on the startup tab. Look down the list and un-tick any references to Norton or Symantec. Close the msconfig windows and restart the PC.

You can re-enable Norton afterwards by oping msconfig again and clicking the 'normal startup' bullet on the first tab.

Yes its a new (newish) hard drive, anyway i'll give what you said a go when i get home

Posted by blayv
another idea is that ide cable is not connected properly. i had similar problem, moved connector a bit and it worked. what's wrong with those ide cables anyway? 2 times my pc was down, both because of them.

Posted by Cycovision
@blayv

They become brittle over time and the thin wires inside develope cracks. I'm glad you suggested that actually, completely slipped my mind and well worth checking out

hey cycovision

need help one one more thing please...when i go to add or remove programs, there are some programs there, which ive uninstalled aaaagees ago but are still there, how do u get rid of them appearing there? ive tried regclean, other spyware programs which clean the registry etc, but none seem to work

Posted by Cycovision
Usually if you click on them and attempt to unistall them it'll throw up an error along the lines 'The application no longer exists, would you like to remove it from the list?' Click yes and it'll go.

If that doesn't work, you need to remove them from the registry directly.

Run the Registry Editor (click start, run, type in regedit)

In the left hand window, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall (click on the little plus signs to expand the trees)

In the right hand pane, left click on the offending programs to highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard. Click 'OK' to confirm. You have to do them one at a time, you can't select multiple keys.

If you're not comfortable hacking the registry manually, Microsoft has a little app that can do it for you called tweak UI. you can download it via the link here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui

if you have spybot on your machine already in the advanced setting is an uninstaller that can help clean up the very things you mention. ive used it a couple of times to get some old palm crap off and it works very well and its easy to use

thanks a lot cycovision!

i usually edit the registry myself, but this time i just couldnt find it

Posted by joebmc
Right I disabled Norton virus as you said problem still persists (haven’t tired the ide cables yet to make sure there connected fine).
This slow down of the pc seems to be doing my head in. some times the pc is nice and fast, how I tell this is by clicking the task bar to show the hidden icons, if it shows them strait away nice and smooth I consider the pc to be working fine but some times it takes ages to show them (see pic for what I’m talking about).

Another thing (I have 2 pc in the house) what is the main cause form a pc restarting its self with no explanation.
The other pc I have for some reason every now and again restarts itself within 1 min of start-up. No explanation or anything it just restarts and all is fine! Any ideas?

Hey Hey...bit of help please

I have a wireless rounter, with a wired connection to my pc, and wireless to my laptop. Ok, now the internet on the pc is fine, BUT with the laptop, for some reason ever 30 mins or so everything internet related (msn, AOL etc) sort of disconnects... then i have to re-sign-in on msn, and AOL.

Any ideas?

I thought perhaps there might be some kind of time-out on the wireless connection.

Any help would be much appriciated.
