what does mate?

It wont make any difference to the transfer speed, It is just a hub which supports USB2.
If you have a PC you can just purchase a PCI USB 2 card and install that.
Posted by blayv
afaik, you can upgrade to usb 2.0 only by installing drivers, and your pc must support usb2.0 standard.
you can't upgrade by putting some adapter to non-2.0 port
Posted by lamont
where could i get the drivers from please? thanks
Posted by blayv
Drivers should be on the cd you got with your motherboard.
Posted by lamont
is there an online directory? cheers

just buy a pci card. dead cheap and dead easy to cheap.
ive just installed one in my 10 yr old pc and it works great (bit slow running the latest msn, wont let me sign in with old msn)
dude_se
Posted by lamont
why does a usb port make msn run slow?
Posted by dude_se
it doesnt. im running msn 7.0 on a ten yr old comp with 32mb of ram and other apps thats why
there was a type above, meant to be dead easy to fit

I recently updated the gfx cards drivers (radeon 9800pro) but now during the post I get an “unknown flash type” message before it boots into widows.
As it still boots into windows I guess this isn’t much of a problem but would rather the message didn’t come up at all.
Other than rolling back the drivers anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance
Posted by dude_se
instead of rolling back the drivers i would of tried to update the drivers first, not sure though but thats what i would of tried first. have you updated the bios? i think you may also have to do this. also although it appears to work does it show up a "?" in device manager?
dude_se
Posted by joebmc
Everything seems as it should in device manager, maybe i should updated the bios (having never done in before) but updated the bios always seems a bit risky. If i mucked up the bios updated is it just a case of changing a jumper to sort it?

i got RAM problems tooo

details are in there!

well im no expert in changing the bios and i have never modded anything inside my pc, just the settings which helped me detect a hdd on my old pc. i havent heard of or had any really bad situations with the bios so you can try and see what happens but be careful. if you are just changing the settings then there is a load default setting which may be handy. my computer can also search for the best proformance setings.
@cent, along with the others i would of said it was spyware.... due to the fact you have 512mb ram and thats a lot. if they havent told you already and you dont have them then download: spybot s & d, adaware, avg, hijack this is also good but be careful. if its notthese things then the ram is failing.

Hi, I know your a pc guy rather then a mac person so thought id ask you about a sony laptop I have. The problem is:
1) The machine has a strange fault.Sometimes it will power up and work perfectly for sometime(1 maybe 2 hours +)then it will blue screen & continue to cycle the blue screen at the "loading XP" screen.Intermittanly it will also not startup from cold.The Sony Vaio Logo is on screen but it will not continue and load the OS.It had a 60GB Drive which was also faulty but I have replaced this with a 40GB(Largest size I had)Software rebuilt from Sony Rebuild CD. - any idea on whats wrong? My guess is its either overheating, or the hd may have a fault as it wasnt a new hd used
The " C " & "Delete " keys are broken.They are both on the keyboard and working but are a bit wobbly.- do you know a way to make them a bit more secure or is it just one of those things i have to live with?
cheers Luke

Problem seems to be fixed now, I reinstalled the card. Also seems to have fixed the problem with the pc running slow at certain times

i would re install xp. totally format the hdd and start again. your hdd may also have bad sectors which i am no expert on but sometimes they can be fixed through a format but if more serious then the hdd is fooked. sounds to me like the hdds gone but try a re install first. you can also check if the computer is overheating by downloading a free program on google. theres a few around. as for your keys on your keyboard i dont know what you could do but i would live with them because glue is not really an option and nothing else would make it work like normal.

Hi, got a little update now it seems to crash at start up just after the sony symbol and when loading xp, im goign to try another hd and see what happens.
Also one time it crashed everything went off screen but the mouse and ntohign responded the mouse would move, but couldnt do much else apart from switch on/off leds by doing things like witching off wi-fi etc
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
well I have just tried a diffenrt hd but that didnt seem to make much difference, so I decided to run a ram test and think I found whats up, acording to the tester only 30% of the ram works. Normally id just buy a new chip but as sony are amazing and way to expensive they decided it would be a good idea to join 512mb of ram into the motherboard, which means it cannot be removed etc.
Are there anyprograms I can run to fix the ram or it it just a lost cause?
Posted by dude_se
lost cause imo.
i have just installed xp on a 200mhz, 32mb ram 10 yr old pc.
was my only option and seems quite fast for opening the standard windows programs. i will keep it till i figure out how to put windows 95 or 98 back on as i am having probs doing this.

Im well confused about this, but all is good as you can see im online.
Let me explain i got 2 collage and looked on the net and it said there may be a device left in 1 of the drives, eg floppy but i was thinking and the last time i used a floppy was well over a 2 years ego but i then rememberd i was taking pics last nite and left my memory stick duo in the slot. So i got home, took the memory stick duo out and still the same, so i then tried all my drives and yes there was a floppy disk, the funny think is that it belonged to my mums friend who visited like 6 month ego and im sure i have turned my PC of since then so why does the problem only arise now?
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
Hi there, I think I have worked out more about the fault in my sony laptop, basically I ran a ram check on it and it failed miserbly looks like all the ram is corrupt, so I thought id remove it, only to find that the ram is built into the motherboard non removable. I thought ok maybe if I stuck a new chip of ram in it would make it work, it does help (doesnt crash as much) but doesnt do the job as I still think its trying to write to the corrupt chips. Is there anyway you know of to remove inbuilt ram, or fix curropted ram? if you do it would be a great help, Cheers Luke

hey. i have a problem i cannot solve. i have taken out the floppy disk drives out my 2 pcs now when plugged back in they dont work. i have tried different conbinations with the ide cables but can only get it to light up green. i read that that means the cables in the wrong way. have i just got the cables mixed up or is it more than that (same happens on both pcs)?
also my old pc only reconises my wid xp cd even though i have a working wid 95 cd and a copied 98 cd. the 98 cd used to work but not now so running xp on a 32mb ram pc which aint good. if theres no hope ill stick with it as its not actually that slow

@ cyco u know much bout adwords and best methods for using it etc
Posted by Cycovision
@max
No, but I know a man who does
@dude
Floppy light always on is, as you say, because the ide cables are in the wrong way round. They need to be in correctly both in the mother board and the drive. In the drive, the red edge of the cable should point to the left hand side side of the drive (looking at the drive from the back where the connectors are).
The reason that you can no longer install 95 or 98 is probably because your hard drive was formatted to NTFS when you put XP on. 95 and 98 boot disks can't recognise the NTFS partition, you need to use fdisk to delete the partiton (fsidk sees it as a 'non-dos partition') and then use fdisk again to create a logical dos (fat16 or 32) partition. Restart the PC, format the new partition and you will be able to install 95 or 98 again.

@cyco. i will try the floppy thing tonight. also it is a fat32 partition and i formatted the pc first of all with fdisk using a 98 floppy boot disk. then the floppy stopped working so i cannot get that back but even then the 98 or 95 cd would not work

I have two problems which i would be most gratefull for any help with! Firstly for some reason even though i have never had tiscali as my ISP in the blue bar at the top of internet explorer it says Tiscali 10.0 ie so when i am on esato like now it says "Post Reply @ Esato - Tiscali 10.0" can i remove this?!
secondly my dad has given me his old work laptop. It has windows 2000 professional on it. He can't logg in to it anymore because he uses some card thing that randomly generates a password. but he got given a new one for his new laptop and threw the old one out. So basically i want to completely reformat the hard drive and put XP on it insted. However the laptop doesn't have any built in drives it has both an external CD and floppy drive that connect via usb. So will i be able to install off these as will usb devices work after i reformat the hard drive? and also how can i reformat if i can't log in to windows 2000 that's on there at the min?
Probably stupid questions but any help would be great! cheers
Posted by dude_se
for the first question i dont really know but i would firstly check the obious of spyware etc... also have you installed anything new lately that you think could of caused it?
second one i can kind of an answer. the usb devices should work. they usually do before it loads the os (in the bios) and then again when the os has fully loaded (well thats the case for me). download a windows 2000 boot disk (1 floppy req) and put that in the floppy drive. hopefully they havent disabled the bios. if they havent then enter the bios so you can change the boot sequence. make sure its set to boot the usb first ( i have just thought that this may not work but worth a try anyway). then it should load the program on the floppy which will allow you to format (if it works). see if it works first or i would try putting a wid xp cd in and see if you can get it to boot from the cd first (you have to set the usb as the first boot device as its an external cd drive). half way through typing this i realised it may not work but worth a try or else you need to get hold of a new hdd.

@welsh
To remove the internet explorer title, you need to download hijack this from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Download it to your desktop, double click it, press 'ok' to all of the warnings and then click 'do a system scan only'.
You'll see a load of horrendous looking registry junk appear. Towards the top of the list, you should see an entry that begins with 'R1 -'. You should also see the offending title text on the same line. Tick the checkbox next to R1 and then click the 'fix checked' button. This will safely remove the registry entry and should hopefully get rid of the annoying title text.
As for reinstalling from a USB drive, as dude says it depends on your laptop's BIOS, and you'll have to have a look around in the CMOS settings to see a:) if the USB drives are recognised by BIOS and b:) if you can select them as a boot device.
@Dude
No '95 CDs and not all '98 CD's are bootable, you're going to have to get that floppy drive working and use a boot disk. It is possible that the floppy drive could be broken if you've tried all possible cable orientations with no luck.

was working before i fiddled around with it and green light comes on. not that i have done a fresh install of xp the floppy icon still appears in my computer. ive just shuved them in any old way not so they dont hang out the pc (the cables). ill have a go. just installing stuff on my old pc. ill stick with xp for a while. with some tweaks its proving to be impressively fast.

ive tweaked my old pc and xp seems to work very fast on it now. boot times not too bad but going to try and speed it up more. also it opens up my documents or my computer very fast. i still need to sort them floppys out

I just set up my wireless network with a D-Link router wich claims to reach 56Mbps and it works great but when i click on the wireless conection icon on task bar it seems to be connected at 11Mbps.
Both router and network card are working under 802.11g so what can i do to use the 56Mbps? Most of the time I just use my wireless lan to surf on the web and 11Mbps its ok but when if I use it to transfer large files from my pc to another on my house its going to be very slow

Hi!I also need an advice: I wanna buy a notebook to use it for Internet, some graphic apps, watching movies and sometimes playing strategy games (nuthin' really heavy duty) and I wonder what would b ur ideea of a good one:512 Mb Ram, 128 shred vide, 60 gb hdd, 1.6 GB processor...
Posted by p900 lover
@Cycovision could you explain the strange Pf usage i had, its all on page 24 please
Posted by Cycovision
@rrojas260
Is the router set to use 802.11g in it's web-based configuration settings?
@701
The specs you mentioned sound fine for what you want to do, just make sure you get a decent graphics system like radeon mobility,
@p900
I'll take a propper look at your problem shortly and try to suss out what was going on
Posted by rrojas260
The only thing i could found about modes was this.
I tried G mode without any luck
Posted by Cycovision
Assuming that the wireless cards in your PCs are 802.11g capable, you can change wireless mode from 'mixed mode' to 'g mode'. That might allow file transfers at the full rate.
Posted by rrojas260
As I said in my previous post, G mode didnt help (and yes, i have a 802.11g network card). I will try on my dad's pc to see if the problem is there too.

cant get floppy working on old pc. it has a disk thing at the bottom and if i plug it one power cable in the back (also connected to my cd copier) then the disc always spins. if i connect it to another power supply connected with a load of wires in the main bit then the disk only spins when s floppy is in. cable seems to be ok in the pc and have tried both ways in pc. on the motherboard it says "floppy" where the ide cable is and i plug the other end in the floppy with no luck. the reason i took them both out is because i kept getting write protection errors on this pcs floppy drive so couldnt coppy wid 95 onto a floppy at a time to install on old pc.

That's the problem with laptops and the video component: u hardly find a dedicated video card in the system. My offer says: " max 128 mb shred'', which means it's not dedicated but the video chipset IS Radeon 9200.Is that the same thing? That's all I can afford unfortunately.
Posted by Cycovision
Yes, the video memory will be shared in all but the most expensive laptops, but the 9200 should be sufficient for the type of games that you want to play

Sounds like it might be a hardware problem to me, when it does feel like booting up, do you get any strange errors occasionally or wierd things happening like freezing up, restarting itself etc?
