thanks for replying, ALL of you

just one thing...could it be related to the fact that i disabled java and javascript?

OR

sometimes i use proxies???

Posted by Cycovision
Disabling Java and Javascript will prevent some websites from displaying properly, but shouldn't cause connection problems.

Playing around with proxy settings, however, might. Are you using a proxy server somewhere or do you have a direct connection to the Internet (several PCs on a router constitutes a direct connection, BTW)?

this right?

ive just got my one pc - using a standard telewest surfboard hope that helps...yep its a proxy SERVER

Posted by Cycovision
@p900

The cat5 cable is fine, but the modem cable doesn't look right as it appears to have a phone socket plug at each end.

Your best bet is to buy a good quality standard phone line extension cable, I know that ISP's reckon that you shouldn't use them but I use a twenty meter one with no problems at all.

@temp

I'm not familiar with telewest because it's not available where I live (we have NTL) but usually you don't need proxy settings to connect to an ISP. Wanadoo put some strange proxy settings into IE but removing them doesn't harm the connection at all. However, this might be different for telewest. I think you really do need to contact them about your downloading problem.

BTW, if you've only got one PC, you can't possibly have a local proxy server since a PC cannot be it's own proxy server! Well, it can, but it defeats the object

Posted by Kwiksta
nooo, i meant a proxy server like:

http://www.proxy7.com

etc...

(im a hypochondriac - if thats how u spell it...me wants a clean pc)

GAH! Don't use shite like that

That might explain it if your download is going through their bloody servers! If their servers pack up for no apparant reason, so does your download!

Posted by Kwiksta
also, when i say i use a proxy occasionnaly, i mean i enter one into mozilla/netscape etc....

Posted by Cycovision
Ooooh, sod that! You can be over cautious, you know!

Posted by Kwiksta
thanks cycovision, lol, so is there any other way to protect my ip from them hacker peoplez

Posted by Cycovision
Get yourself a hardware firewall and check your PC for viruses, spyware etc. regularly and you'll be fine!

This is why phishing is becoming more widespread, hackers are having a much harder time getting at your personal stuff due to the recent onslaught of PC security hardware and software that they have to look at other avenues

Woo Hoo mi computers back to its normal quick self!! Thanks mate i owe you 1!!

hi, with windows vieta on the horizon i was wondering if anyone actually knew what the system requirements would be... ive heard a lot of rumors but no-onw i know actually knows... is it true that you will need an athlon 64 to get the full benifit?? will the older athlon xp's run vista - and well?

any advise or sites would be greatly appreciated..

cheers all

Posted by Cycovision
Microsoft won't release the minimum specs until next summer, however the beta testers were told they needed:

-512 Mb RAM

-A seperate graphics card (not onboard), although I think this is more down to driver support in the early testing stages rather than an absolute requirement

-A 'modern' amd athlon or intel processor.

I suspect that by modern they mean around 1.4Ghz or faster, but it doesn't have to be 64 bit.

Posted by blayv
yeah, and that'll be enough to show start-up screen. to open start menu you'll need something like p4@3G ;-p

Posted by Cycovision
Well, they are recomending a 2Ghz + processor with a 128Mb graphics card if you want to use Aero, the legacy display modes are more shed-friendly, apparantly

Posted by batesie
sorry to butt in here, but is it true your going to name your first child DOS ???

Posted by p900 lover
When is vista ment to be out?

Posted by Cycovision
Well my daughter's called Emily actually. I wanted to call her kernal32.exe but her mother was having none of it

@P900

Q3 - Q4 2006 is the current projected release date.

Posted by batesie
lol bless! well you could call your next one system32.dll

What are the symptons of a dying cpu?

Posted by Kwiksta
hey cycovision

cheers for your help mate, i really appretiate it

theres no alternative to the firewall thing is there? is there any other method?

Posted by Cycovision
@Temp

Yeah, a software firewall is good enough for most people. It's just if you want to be really, really safe a hardware firewall is preferable.

@joebmc

The symptoms are the same as for a failing motherboard:

Random crashing
Blue Screening
Can't install software (despite knowing that the CD drive is ok)
Wierd error messages
Total freezing up (can't move mouse pointer)
PC restarting itself

Trouble is, one or more of the above symptoms can also be a sign of poor heat dissipation, failing memory or even failing IDE devices or cables.

First thing to do if you suspect a failing CPU is to remove the heatsink and fan, clean them thouroughly (clean the surface of the CPU too using kitchen paper), apply a good amount of thermal grease and replace the heatsink and fan. Very often the CPU is fine, it's just not cooling properly, despite what any hardware temperature monitors might say.

@icewinds

To be honest, I've never used a remote control and reciever with media centre, but I suspect you might need extra software to get all of the functionality. Can you post the make and model number of the remote / reciever?

http://www.xpcgear.com/xpremote.html

hope this helps...

Posted by Cycovision
Sounds like it hasn't installed properly, although I may be wrong about that. M$ reckon that when you plug the reciever in, a wizard should start up automatically to help you configure the remote.

Firstly, try uninstalling and reinstalling the reciever by following the instructions here:

A little help please......
I recently got myself an ADSL connection and my isp supplied me with an router....its a d-link dsl502t.
It connects to my pc through a usb port but the problem is sometimes right out of the blue for no apparent reason my connection just hangs....ie no more connectivity and the connected icon in the taskbar does nothing on right clicking anymore. WHY??
I switch the router off n on and everything works again so it doesnt seem to a connection problem as far as my provider is concerned.
I've upgraded to latest drivers and also updated my router's firmware to no avail
My router provides an option to connect via ethernet.........so i removed the usb cable n connected it using the ethernet cable (mobo has built in gigabit ethernet).....it shows connected in task-bar but i dont really have a connection anymore.....i didnt confg anything or change any settings coz i dont know if any need to....DO THEY??
I'll be glad if you can help me out mate

Oh btw i run xp sp2 and its fully updated.

my brpadband also disconnects randomly after i got upgraded to 2mb. i havent had time to check it. maybe cyco can post some advice. i would of thought its something to do with my isp as connections havent changed nor has anything on pc as far as i know.

@ cyco

thanks, but a normal norton firewall doesnt protect my ip

Posted by Cycovision
@clank

Disconnect the router totally and then uninstall the USB drivers. Restart the PC and then connect the router via the Ethernet connection. Follow the instructions in the setup manual (usually included as an acrobat file on the supplied CD) to configure the router via your web browser. Ethernet and routers usually get on like a house on fire!

@dude

Sounds like you might have a weak ADSL signal, not a lot you can do about it other than contact your ISP and BT

@temp

No firewall hides your IP address totaly! If it did, you wouldn't be able to get on the internet at all since your IP addy needs to be visable to your ISP's servers in order for them to know where to send the information to!

The important thing is that a firewall blocks unwanted applications from accessing the net (like viruses) and it blocks unsecured ports that hackers can get in through. Just because a port and your IP address is visable, it doesn't mean that people can get in

Posted by dude_se
i have just contacted bt. as i said its usually fine but will disconnect randomly sometimes. ill see what they say

My new pc does not have no ps/2 connections and the keyboard and mouse are both usb. I recently brought a new keyboard which is a ps/2 connection so i brought a PS/2 to USB CONVERTER / ADAPTOR but when i connected it to my pc i get the standard new hardware, then unknown device and then this messege: and the keyboard does not work. How ever when connected the num lock button works when i press it the light comes on. What is the problem? i have tried diffrent keyboards and mouses and 2 diffrent PC's

Posted by Cycovision
Have you tried a USB keyboard rather than a ps/2 keyboard with a converter?

my main mouse and keyboard are usb and they work fine.

Yeah, XP only has built in drivers for 'true' USB keyboards and mouses (mice? )

If you have Servcice Pack 2 you could try obtaining the driver online. With the keyboard plugged in, right-click on 'My computer', select 'properties', 'hardware' then 'device manager'. Find the keyboard in the list (it'll have a cross or exclaimation mark next to it) and then double-click it. Click 'update driver' and follow the wizard. When it asks you if you'd like to look for a driver online, select 'yes, this time only'.

there is no keyboard in the list appart from my normal usb one.

Hve you tried expanding all of the USB device trees right at the bottom of device manager? Unknown USB devices are often listed there.

I've just had a PM from someone asking how to manually uninstall an application, thought it might be usefull to post it here.

If you can't remove a program using add / remove programs, you need to do the following:

1. Download and install this program -

http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

It's a safe and easy to use registry cleaner that you'll need later on.

2. Restart the PC in safe mode. Shut down or restart the PC and repeatedly tap the 'F8' key while it boots up until you are presented with the windows advanced boot menu. use the arrow keys and enter to select safe mode.

3. Open 'my computer', double click on 'C:' (the hard drive) and then double click 'Program files'.

4. Find the folder that contains the program that you want to get rid of. They're usually named after the program itself, or the company that created the program. Be very carefull here, if you're not sure, open the folder up to see if it gives you any more clues.

5. Delete the entire folder

6. Restart the computer in normal mode.

7. When it's back up, run easycleaner and use the 'clean registry' option to remove any registry entries that the program may have put in.

That should do the trick!
