@Cycovision
CDs burn normally and I can read both CDs and DVDs without problems. I have used different media, but I get the same error message except when using 1x DVD+R discs. When I use those discs the burn procedure appears to work, but I can't read the contents of the DVD. Interestingly enough the 1x DVD+R discs are burnt at 4x by Nero.
Posted by Cycovision
Ahhh, it's not the old +r and -r dilema is it? some drives (including mine) claim to be able to write to both formats but appear to write better to one rather than the other.
Try downloading the trial version of Roxio Easy CD creater maybe? Yes, it's a bit of a noddy burner but in this case I think it might be interesting. What I can't understand is how nero tries to write at 2.4x speed, normally it'll only burn using whole multiples, 2x, 4x, 8x etc. I'd like to know if roxio tries to do the same thing?

couple of questions-
1. do you have the lastest firmware for the dvd drive.
2. what is it you are trying to copy.
3. when you put the blank disc into the drive is windows regonising it ie go into my computer were the dvd is listed is it now a dvd disc instead of just the dive with a disc on top.

What version of zone alarm should i use? Last year I have been using ver5.5, but lately I've been using windows firewall only, so I'm bit outdated with za.
Posted by Cycovision
Latest version is 6.1 if I remember correctly, available from here:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store[....]talog/products/sku_list_za.jsp
As I said though, it's only really if you use the pro version that you need to have the most up to date version since the free version only blocks certain ports and applications that you haven't allowed.
Which is what a firewall is meant to do! Leave virus and spyware removal to your antivirus and antispyware apps, these all-in-one 'internet security suites' often cause more problems than they solve in my experience.

Hey all
Recently I tried to burn a film to DVD but the software I tried to use said no drives had been detected. I went into my computer and found out that both my CD drives had vanished. I tried to put a CD into both but nothing happens.
The first drive is a standard DVD ROM drive
The second is CD-RW drive
I then went into device manager and found an exclamation mark by both the drives! It said something about no hardware found (code 41) !!!!!!!
Please Help

have you taken your pc apart lately? i wouldnt of thought so but that happened to me once. the ide cable had come loose. otherwise can you think of anything that might of caused this?
dude_se
Posted by JT
Nope I havent touched the computer. The first thing I thought of was that a cable had come out but I dont see how. I guess Ill have to have a look inside the computer. Any other ideas?
Posted by dude_se
uninstall the cd drives from device manager. then reboot. if it finds them again (add hardware wizard) then re install drivers. if not then i think theres a connection problem

After some extensive research I have found out that some registry keys had been deleted. It seems I am not the only one this has happened to.
Problem Solved
Posted by scotsboyuk
The DVDs aren't recognised by Windows as being DVDs. The autoplay feature shows that a blank CD has been insterted, but explorer shows a size of 0 bytes. Interestingly when I installed Roxio explorer did recognise them as blank DVDs and showed their capacity correctly.
A I said I installed Roxio, but it didn't work either. Again it said that the write speed was 2.4x and this is the speed it attempted to burn at.
Posted by slattery69
if windows isnt regnosing it as a dvd then it could be a media problem, windows should pick up on the fact a dvd has been installed and that it a blank one.
what happens if you put an original dvd in plays without problem?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@slattery
I have no problems reading DVDs, I can watch films, access data discs, etc. The strange thing is that once Roxio was installed the blank DVD was recognised as a blank DVD and the free space displayed correctly although I still couldn't write to it.
I have tried burning a DVD+RW under Ubuntu with the ame result; Gnome Baker tries to burn at 2.4x whether I set the write speed higher or not.
Nero must somehow have recognised the DVD+RW as being capable of burning at 4x when I managed to burn that one disc succesfully, I'm just not sure how.

ok, 10x.
1 more question.
i'm building my pc.
i'll buy intel p4 processor (630 most probably)
i'm not sure what chipset for motherboard should i choose- thinking between 945 and 925?
so what chipset, or what motherboard do you recommend me to buy for that processor?
Posted by Cycovision
Depends how much you want to spend really, personally I'd choose an Asus or Gigabyte board with SLI and Nforce 4 chipset.
No particular reason for my choice of chipset other than it's what I've used on all of my recent machines and the driver installation and updating is a doddle, only one unified driver to install. Performance wise, Nforce 4 has failed to disappoint me so far.
The overclocking bods have been recommending SIS chipsets again lately though, so if you want all out performance I guess you should go for the latest SIS board.
Posted by blayv
i have bad experience with asus, gigabyte is quite ok, but recently everyone is recommending me abit for mb brand. also i'd like to avoid nforce, because i'll use separate graphic card so i wouldn't like to pay more if i don't use it. also i heard sata is not so great, so can't choose HDD.
Posted by Cycovision
You can get nforce boards with SLI and no onboard graphics. Personally, I'm quite into sata drives and nowadays it's quite difficult to get a good mobo that doesn't have sata, even if it still comes with 2 IDE ports. At any rate, I would suggest that you get one with both sata and 2 x IDE so that you have the choice. Also, later on you'll have the option to use RAID with the faster sata drives if you wish.
Oddly enough, I've had tons of trouble in the past with Abit boards, so much so that I wouldn't dream of using one again
Just goes to show, it's all down to luck really. I think that as long as you don't use PCChips or MSI or such like, you should be OK whichever board you choose.
Posted by blayv
sorry if my previous post is unclear. my doubts are: -when i use separate g-card, does it mean n-force has no purpose?-i heard sata disc slows down start-up, but there's no significant improvement in working speed (about 10percent?)-my imperative is 800Mhz + ddr2 + 64bit + hyperthreading-i'm wondering if there's any difference (in performance) between 925x and 945p/pl?
Posted by Cycovision
Ahh right!
1. The nforce chipset does everything, northbridge, southbridge, onboard sound and grahics. If you use your own graphics card, the chipset is still doing all of the other functions. There is nothing special about the nforce chipset, it's a chipset like any other except many people (myself included) find it to be superior.
2. Sata drives do not slow down system startup at all. They have a higher data transmission rate than P-ATA drives at all stages of operation.
3. I've not come across any info regarding the performance of 925x and 945p/pl systems, so I can't realy comment on that. We only build AMD systems these days, so I've no personal experience of them either, I'm afraid

I've just recieved a PM asking me about chipsets, so I thought i'd answer it here for anybody else who might be wondering.
Chipsets are traditionaly made up of two seperate microchips, the North Bridge and the South Bridge, named after their original locations on the motherboards that first used them (one at the top, one at the bottom).
The North bridge is responsible for transporting information from the memory to the CPU via the Front Side Bus and vice-versa. Typically, the CPU works much, much faster than the memory and so a 'manager' is needed to make sure that the correct information is sent to the CPU at the right time, and that the processed information is delivered back to the memory as quickly as possible.
Some North Bridges are also responsible for 'off-loading' other jobs onto additional hardware. For example, if the processed information leaving the CPU is meant to go to the graphics card, the north bridge will handle this without any interaction from the CPU itself. Nowadays, however, a part of the CPU itself is usually responsible for doing this rather than the North Bridge.
The South Bridge Can be thought of as the computer's 'eyes and ears'. It contains all of the electronics needed for handling all input / output operations such as reading from the mouse and keyboard and sending and recieving information to and from the USB ports.
On motherboards that have on-board graphics, sound and network ports, the south bridge is also responsible for these functions as well, although there are often some additional microchips that are controlled by the South Bridge to help improve performance by taking some of the strain off the South Bridge itself.
However, the South Bridge needs the CPU to do some of the calculations for it in order to drive the graphics and sound of a computer. This is one of the reasons why adding a graphics card and / or sound card can greatly improve a computer's performance, since the additional card does all of the work without having to use the CPU as much (and consequently the main memory). Adding graphics and sound cards does not render your chipset useless because it still has to do the very important jobs mentioned above.
There a number of chipset manufacturers, most notably VIA, SIS, Intel and Nvidia. Whilst all chipsets do the same thing, some techies prefer a certain chipset vender over others, mainly due to performance issues or just plain personal reasons!
One last note, the Nforce 4 chipset actually consists of only one chip rather than two. The North Bridge and South Bridge are combined on one big microchip rather than two seperate ones, but it's still a chipset just like all the others!

Ugh, I can't believe you said VIA with a straight face cyco!

@Dude
Everything should work fine providing that you're running Windows 98 Second Edition, not first (or a newer OS, of course).

98 se. too slow on me. anyway i meant pci card
will be useful as i can install programs without copying them onto a cd from this computer. now that im getting a usb pci card i should look into more ram but its quite old and cant see any on ebay so might leave it and live with 32mb

what isp have you got? maybe they are cutting you off after a certain period of time. oh does it happen with any big download or just on certain pages? this problem cant be browser related as far as i know, so must be pc or isp related
dude_se
Posted by blayv
i had similar problem, and it was due to bad isp- to download with mozzila you must have uninterrupted data flow (speed may vary, but flow must be continuous). use flash get 1.6, it can resume broken download.
Posted by Cycovision
@temp
Yeah, i agree with the others here, definately sounds like you've got a dodgy connection. This is usualy due to either your ISP or phone / cable line or (more commonly) viruses and / or spyware on your PC.
Give your PC a thorough clean up to make sure that it can't be malware related and if the problem persists, phone your ISP.

Here is another question for you, hope you dont mind. We are going to get another PC in the house and want to conect it to the interent with wifi, now the main PC already has a router so there is wifi in the house all i need 2 know is what does the new PC need to have 2 be able to conect to it. I know with a laptop all u need is a wirless PC card but not all desktops come with a PC card slot so im not sure what i need.
Also if a virus is downloaded onto the new PC is there any way for it to transfer to the main PC?
Oh and 1 more thing, as we have 8mb at home is there any way to limit the new PC to lets say to 2mb?
Thanks a lot

hi, does anybody here understand and read hijackthis files? thanks
Posted by Cycovision
@p900
1. Your desktop PC needs only a PCI wireless card. It slots into any spare PCI slot actually inside your computer (you have to take the side off to fit it!). The PCI slots are the ones where your dial-up modem (if you have one) are fitted.
2. Yes, viruses can spread over networks. All PCs on the network should have their own antivirus program running.
3. Some routers allow you to impose cap limits for each client on the network via the router's control panel.

Much better! The winupdates.exe file (gaobot worm) isn't in the startup anymore which is the main thing.
Now you need to update your AVG (if necessary), restart in safe mode and do a full virus scan. Follow that by running whichever spyware apps you use (spybot s+d, adaware etc.) again making sure that they're fully updated first

@p900
Yes, you can get wireless USB dongles, similar to bluetooth dongles, if you don't fancy taking the side off your PC. You can buy them from amazon if I remember correctly. The only thing is, the new PC must support USB 2.0 (which it will if it's brand new
As for the router, you'll have to read (download it from the manufacturer's web site if necessary) the documentation I'm afraid since each router is different. Router control panels are always accessed via your web browser, usually by typing in it's IP address (10.0.0.2 is a common router IP address) and entering the required username and password.

Should be able to get your dongle from there as well, don't know how the prices compare to other sites though!

any pci device is easy to fit. take case off. put in an available socket (just pushes in). a blind person could do it

What about drivers? And will there deffinitley be a PCI slot free?
Posted by dude_se
most pcs should have atleast 1 free as standard. just take your case off now and have a look. will be ok as long as you dont touch anything. its just a white rectangle. there should be at least 3 of them in a quite modern pc. some devices do not need drivers as pc will install it automatically although some will need the os cd (eg windows xp cd, or a driver cd). should be easy to get drivers off internet if it doesnt come with any

Cat5E cable and a DSL modem cable is what you need (I sound like Yoda there
The wireless card, PCI or USB, will come with a driver disk. In the case of USB, you put the cd in first and install the software before plugging the dongle in. For the PCI card, you put the card in first with the pc switched off, turn the PC on, cancel the 'found new hardware wizard' and stick the CD in then.
