Hi guys, thanks for the help removing the build number the other day, just have a quick q?
Would I be able to set up my laptop as a wireless broadcaster?
ie, I have an internet connection to my laptop, would there be any way to use my laptops build in 802.11g card to broadcast that internet connection to my Wireless devices? (PDA, PSP, Other Laptop etc)?
Thanks alot,
Charlie -

It's certainly possible but unless XP service pack 2 has (yet more!) hidden goodies, I think you need third party software.
Here's one we've used for a customer in the past:
http://www.vicomsoft.com/products.html
But it might work out cheaper and a hell of a lot easier to buy a wireless router, particularly if you want to connect your PSP as well.
Has anybody done a straight wireless p2p network without a router or extra software? If so, please let us know how!

Are there any Windows PCs on sale in the UK that are about the same size as a Mac Mini?
My boss wants to get just a cheap, basic PC that we can test web-sites and stuff on, but wants it to be small!!
I've seen a complete rip-off of the Mac mini available in Korea, but not in the UK...
Any links would be appreciated! Cheers!

Hello all, I have an e-mail problem.
My wife sent an e-mail to her parents but spelt the address wrong and it caused an error. The server rejected it as an invalid address, error code 550 - Invalid Recipient, but now it's permanently attached itself to our user accounts and an error message shows up every time I open Outlook Express.
I've tried erasing the message from the 'Sent Items' and also from 'Deleted Items' but to no avail.
Can anyone help me?
Posted by Cycovision
Who is your ISP, or who do you use for email? If they provide webmail, you could try logging onto that to see if the message is stuck in the server-side outbox and if so, deleting it from there.
Posted by carkitter
My ISP is Xtra.co.nz from Telecom New Zealand.
What do you mean by Webmail?
I have the morning off work tomorrow, if the problem rests with the server, I can give Xtra a call in the morning. Too tired to do so right now, it's 20 past midnight here.

lol see you in the morning
What I meant was, many ISPs provide a web site on which you can send and recieve your email as well as using outlook / outlook express etc.
Sometimes, messages get stuck on the server and they don't appear in outlook, but they do appear on your webmail page.
Posted by carkitter
Solved.
Rang Xtra and they said that it is probably still in the Outbox, causing problems from there. Sure enough...

Further to my previous query about a Mac mini sized PC, it appears that Evesham Micros/Technologies (whatever they're called these days) in my home town have the exclusive deal to market these:
which is a similar size to the Mac mini:
The only big difference is the price, Evesham want £699 for it (?) whereas a Mac mini starts at just £359 almost half the cost!!! (It's not clear whether a monitor, mouse & keyboard are included with the PC, but even adding that to the Mac minis cost it would still be over £150 cheaper!)
Here's the news at The Register

anyone know much about mac?
ive got a powerbook thats acting funny!
every time i turn it on the clock/date resets back to midnight 1971! iphoto wont open. and it wont let me install ANYTHING onto it(and theres plenty of space on the HD
Posted by Cycovision
JoolsG4 is your man for macs, but the date problem is almost certainly caused by a dead or dying CMOS battery. They're very cheap and very easy to replace, you can buy them from just about any hardware store such as Wilkinsons etc.
Posted by Jools
@Dicky:
As a temporary measure just enter the correct date and time in System Preferences > Date & Time, and leave the PowerBook plugged-in while you use it, install stuff etc.
Then have a look here: PowerBook: Testing Backup Battery
You need to find out whether its a rechargable internal backup battery or not. If you're not comfortable fiddling with your PowerBook, just visit a nearby Apple Service Centre.
@Cycovision: I'm not intending to hijack your PC Help thread. Think we might need a Mac Help thread!!

okay...you know when (on windows, im on XP home) you get an error box that pops up, you get that annoying horriable sounding BEEP noise? how do i get rid of it? I didnt used to have it, now i re-installed windows (had troubles with the computer), and now the sound is backkk, and its at work, so they can hear when i mess up hahaa, or when i send an IM to someone, and i want that quiet thanks!
Posted by leeboy13
go to
'settings'
'control panel'
'sounds'
then in the scheme bar - choose 'no sounds'
Job done! but you lose other sounds such as windows start up etc.....
Posted by defensive
or you could just edit individual sounds, in ECS's case the 'critical stop' and choose (none) as the sound, maybe a little better than loosing EVERY sound hey guys!
Posted by leeboy13
i dont bother with any sounds..... i listen to music when im on the pc unless playing games, so for me - i switch all sounds off.....
but you can switch off each one individually as stated above
Up to you i guess

external hard-disc-drive if you can afford one, you pick up reasonable sized 160GB ones like this one from Maxtor for about £130 and its nice and easy to use.
EDIT; I can't type on my new laptop

Yup, I agree with Defensive, Maxtor one-touch hard drives are the quickest and easiest way to back up your data.
If you want to create an entire back up of your hard drive to DVD, then Norton Ghost is my preferred app:
http://www.symantec.com/home_[....]ducts/backup_recovery/ghost10/
However, if you only have a small number of important files to back up, a 1 or 2Gb USB pen drive might be adequate.
Posted by p900 lover
thanks guys, so when buying a HD i want it to say USB2 compatible right? and my pc should be USB2 right?
i think its better if i do a whole HD backup, iv got quite a bit of music too and wouldnt want 2 lose that.

i need some help. not really pc related but you may be able to help. i have just brought a new mp3 player off an esato member but the fm radio is real crap. crapper than the free ones you can get. hardly picks up any signal. its a mp3 player off ebay so no warranty as far as i know. i love listening to the radio but its impossible. would this be hardware or software related. i have my old mp3 player here aswell which has a bad firmware. i was thinking that i could swap the fm chips but that would be way too hard. any other ideas?
dude_se
Posted by Cycovision
It's almost certainly going to be hardware related and I'm afraid to say that there's not really a lot you can do about it
If the mp3 player has a socket for an external antenna then you could get one of those long wire type antennas and try that. Might improve reception quite a bit.
I don't think it's possible to swap the 'fm chips' over. Even if the mp3 players were identical, they're likely to use surface mount IC's which makes them practically impossible to de-solder, at least not without specialist equipment.

well the seller said it worked alrght for him but works real bad with me. i love having the fm option. what should i do?

Posted by EastCoastStar
heyy all...
well look back a few posts about my problem.
i even picked "no sounds" and am still hearing this sound?! ... any more ideas?
Posted by Cycovision
Does the Beep come from the speakers, or does it come from inside the PC itself? if it's coming from the PC, the only way to stop it would be take the side off and disconnect the speaker cable from the motherboard.
Posted by EastCoastStar
its coming from the computer, not the speakers.
but i never used to have this sound. i wonder why it started when i re-installed windows. there must have been something to make it stop before right?
the sound is really annoying too... in some way it reminds me of an old 56K modem hahaha (not the sound, but the quality of it lol)
or... a nokia
Posted by dude_se
ive made progress with my mp3 player. ive opened it up and if i put a screwdriver on any 4 of the solders where the black headphone jack is the signal is improved. what does that mean?

oi!!!!!!! my Nokia 8800 sounds nothing like a dial-up modem!!!!!!
back on track; do what cyco says
Posted by Cycovision
@ECS
Usually, the PC speaker kicks in when the sound drivers aren't installed properly or aren't the correct drivers. Uninstall and then reinstall the sound drivers, making sure that you install the latest version of the correct drivers. Some sound drivers will work even if they are the wrong ones for your sound device, but they can cause problems like you describe.
@Dude
It could be because you're in a bit of a bad reception area for the type of reciever that the MP3 player uses. Even though a bigger radio works fine, it's likely that the reciever in your mp3 player is going to be a bit puney. Unless you can attach an external aerial, I really can't think what else to suggest
Posted by dude_se
i have an even smaller broken mp3 player that picked up a better signal. oh and its the same radio chip in both.
Posted by Cycovision
One thing to consider, was the seller stretching the truth a little with regards to the radio reception
Posted by dude_se
well he said it was good and said it worked fine for him.
Posted by dude_se
ok now the player will not switched on, was fine a min ago. didnt do anything to it. battery is fine. it works perfect in the pc. what could now be wrong?
Posted by jenbones
Looks like you need a 21st mp3 player

why dont u just bugger off and grow up

@Dude
I'm sorry mate but I'm all out of ideas on this one, maybe someone else has some (sensible!) suggestions? I hate to say it, but I think you might (and I mean, might) have been sold a duffer
Posted by dude_se
but its someone off this forum who seems trustworthy, ill try and get my money back. dont have a clue why it wont power up now. everything seems to be connected perfectly

I ahve been attempting to burn DVD+RW discs, but with little success. Using Nero I am unable to alter the write speed from 2.4x, but using this speed I get an error message saying 'Illegal Disc'. However, the other evening, for some reason, Nero burned a DVD+RW disc at 4x and it worked! It is back to 2.4x again and once again I have no option to change it.
Interestingly enough when I ran a utility to check the disc information it gives me two set of write speeds, the first one corresponds to the 2.4x speed and the second corresponds to the 4x speed. Could the second write speed be something to do with MODE SENSE? If so how do I activate MODE SENSE as the prefered system over the the system my drive is currently using?
The drive I'm using is a RICOH DVD+RW RW8165.

@scots: is it cheap media? Or is the media all at least 4x rated?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Gigs
The media is 1x - 4x. One disc did burn successfully when the write speed was changed. I did manage to get the write speed changed to 4x earlier this evening although in a rather roundabout way. However, Nero then informed me that the current disc in the drive could only be written to at 2x and then promptly tried writing to it at 2.4x. There seemed to be no problem with writing to the successful disc at 4x.
The write strategy for the disc is 4x.
Posted by Cycovision
Well, to get the obvious stuff out of the way, have you cleaned the laser diode recently? Running a CD cleaning disk through a drive often sorts out many problems.
Nero does analyse the disk when you put it in the drive and limits it's settings according to what it *believes* the disk to be. As Gigs said, it could be that you have a duff batch of DVDs, I'd certainly buy one or two very good quality disks by a different manufacturer and try those just to see if it is a problem with the media.
If the above suggestions don't do the trick, it might be worth downloading a different burner such as roxio just for testing purposes. It is possible, although unlikely, that Nero has become corrupted in some way.
The other possibility, of course, is that the drive itself is on it's way out. How does it perform normally? Does it play music CDs or movie DVDs ok? Does installing software take a long time or sometimes fail? All of these could point again to a dirty laser diode or in the worst case scenario, a failing drive.

i currently use syagte firewall as many will know syagte were bought by symantec (norton) theyve decided not to support sygate firewall anymore execpt the enterpirse version.
so is it worth contiuning to use syagte or am i best looking around for another friewall that will have support and updates ie zone alarm
Posted by Cycovision
Being a firewall, it's main purpose is to block all network activity from programs that YOU haven't allowed. As such, updates are not as important as they are for, say, an antivirus program since YOU get to decide whether a program is legit or not. However, bug fixes and such like can be valuable and so I would suggest that you move over to ZoneAlarm, as long as you don't mind the occasional nag screen every now and then that is!
