Can't you just get the OEM version from amazon.co.uk?
It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the retail version and exactly the same, except you don't get the pretty box and booklet!

Absolutely bonkers

lol, my partitions were looking like a train wreck (so much for getting my dad to install my os's, i'd have done it properly
i had 512mb space left on xp
1gig left on vista
5gigs left on ubuntu
2 gigs in xubuntu
20gb linux swap
and 360gigs unallocated space
the big format button on the Ubuntu live cd never seemed so appealing

"No not really" and "probably not" are the answers as I suspect you already know!
Is this another bit of Linux propaganda?

aarrrggghhhhh!!!! Bloody vista! now the recycle bin has vanished!! any1 got any ideas where its gone?
Posted by masseur
can you still see it in windows explorer (near the bottom)
edit: I'll assume you somehow deleted the icon from the desktop so...
right click on the desktop.
click personalize.
In the window that comes up there should be a blue column on the left.
under tasks click change desktop icons. put a tick in the box that says recycle bin.

Hey
Started using iTunes again, but its being a twat.
Shuffle is only playing the same songs again and again. I currently have 717 songs on it and i cant get off The Stokes and Fix You by coldplay
Posted by QVGA
Vista always runs a check disk before starting and its really annoying. There was a problem when we had power shut downs here so my PC always shutted down improperly, but not anymore. Is there a reason why it always checks? I even let it check everytime, it goes to 23% after which windows loads.
I even scheduled a scan next time i start windows, again it checked, went to 23% and started windows and still i get the same error checks everytime i start my PC.

I get MSN but no Internet working, tried firefox, safari and IE. Any ideas?

"Have you tried turning it off and on again"
Seems to fix most things on Windoze.
Posted by thomas93
Yes, unplugging wireless adaptor and unpluggin g wireless box.
Ethernet doesn't work either.
Least I have the craptop
Posted by paul101
most of the time when internet isnt working (because you connect a different computer to it) the modem simply requires a re-start... un plug the modem from the mains, wai about 15 seconds and plugg it back in again
Posted by Danny_BFC
Can i use 2 mice on windows xp? A wireless one through USB and a optical wired on the PS/2 slot ?
Its not working eitherway...
[edit] its working now, hope it still does after a reboot

Ok guys, need urgent help.
I have a wireless card in my laptop (Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor Model No.:WPC54G ver 7.1)
It doesn't work I just get the two beeps sound.
I think my PCMIA slot drivers have gone any ideas?
Posted by Cycovision
Do you mean that it beeps almost immediately when you switch the laptop on (before windows loads)?
If so, it's nothing to do with drivers, more likely that the card has had it. Quickest solution would be to buy one of those USB wireless adapters I guess.
Posted by thomas93
No, when I plug it in, it's external as my laptop is rather old
the quicker the better folks
Posted by Cycovision
Sorry if this sounds silly, but what happens if you plug it in with the computer switched off and then boot it up?
PCMCIA is supposed to be (sort of) plug n play but windows won't always have it.
Posted by thomas93
Nothing just doesnt work
Posted by Cycovision
Well, it's probably either the card or the PCMCIA slot itself, I'm afraid
Can't be windows because it won't even get that far.
A BIOS update might solve it if it isn't the card that's faulty.
Posted by thomas93
How might I do that?
Posted by Cycovision
It depends on the make and model of the laptop but basically it's like flashing the firmware on your phone, except you use a floppy disk or CD.
I'm not being patronising here, but you really do have to know what you're doing since, like your phone, if it goes wrong it can kill the PC!
Posted by thomas93
Sod it then.
New card here we go
Posted by 5nak3
Not really a problem, but I am looking at buying a CHEAP laptop for a holiday I've got coming up so i can store photos, surf the net a bit, burn a few CDs/DVDs.
The only problem is most of the laptops i've seen from high street chains seem to have Vista stuck on them, is there any chance that someone may know of a shop (i'd prefer a fairly well known one) that sells XP based laptops.

Itunes is really being a twat now....

@5nak3
I think you'll struggle to find a brand new PC of any kind with XP these days other than second hand or maybe through Dell's business section
@Paul
It's nothing more than a blooming calculator, for god's sake!
Posted by paul101
ahh, if you shout sudo at it with a stern voice it works
why is suse better??
Posted by 5nak3
@Cyco
Yeah i figured that much, it is just annoying that my budget doesn't allow for a notebook with enough ram to make vista a viable option, plus when i played with it a bit i hated it. It was like having a nanny on board with you, i also fear that there may be compatibility issues with my phone, camera, keyboard etc etc....
I actually found a PC via PC-World's business section for about £300
http://www.pcwb.com/catalogue/item/A0383669
Really tempted in buying this one, although i've not had any experience with a celeron processor, so could someone just give a heads up as to what to expect?
As i said nothing too demanding will be thrown at the PC web surfing, DVD/CD buring, storing pictures, maybe using it for a jukebox for a few parties etc...
Anything i should keep in mind?

celeron?? reeealy slow
Posted by 5nak3
see that is what i was afraid of, i had a run in with AMD a good few years ago hated it, it was so slow. Moved to intel have been happy with them, but now given the budget constraints plus the availability of machines running XP i'm looking at a celeron.
I could get a dual core laptop with XP but that doubles the budget...damn vista!
Posted by paul101
why not get refurb??
you can get dual core laptops with 1 gig of ram for about £250

For some strange reason my net connection will suddenly only allow me to access esato but no other sites that i can find? Limewire runs fine but nothing else i just get server not found errors? Anyone got any ideas? I've rebooted my pc and rooter several times and switched them off at the plug for a few hours and tried again but nothing?
I've checked all my firewall settings and i even resorted to doing a system restore to a few days ago when all was ok but it hasn't worked?

Is this windows XP or Vista?
If it's XP, try this (if you can download it on another PC or something!):
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Although it could be a problem with your ISP's DNS servers too, my connection does this too occasionally.
Posted by Burgaz
it is indeed xp... I figured it may be oranges problem but it's been like it for two days now...?
I'll try that winsockfix thingy.
i briefly managed to access that winsock site then and funnily enough i ran a registry cleaner yesterday...!

Posted by Burgaz

Sounds like your ISP to me. Give 'em a ring
Posted by Burgaz
Cheers Cyco i think you may have been right. I can access a bit more now....
Posted by Burgaz
Hmmm... Thinks have changed today. It seems i can connect for about 20minutes no problem but then suddenly everything goes tits up. I reboot and all is ok again for 20minutes or so?
Any ideas?
I've already tried a system restore to a week ago but it made no difference? My rooter is constantly cnnected all through this. All the right lights are on.

paul not everyone can get linux to install not everyone can get drivers to work it is not a option for everyone, some people cant cope with out certain ms products,
how about when you re-install burgaz you make say a couple of gig partition through the windoze cd and install the os separate then you have a diff partition for your data and prog's if it happens again
