how do i enable the scrolling thingy that you hold the middle mouse button and move the mouse up and down to scroll in firerfox??
its a livesaver on laptops btw
Posted by Cycovision
Auto scroll is a windows thing isn't it? It's normally on by default but I should imagine it's in the control panel under 'mouse'. Unless there's a seperate control panel for the laptop's touchpad...
@gtreds
It depends on the motherboard and memory. Sometimes, higher speed memory will "clock down" to either the maximum bus speed supported by the motherboard or to the lowest speed memory in the system.
As for your Vista disk, yes it looks like it definitely doesn't like your hardware configuration so you're stuck with XP until you can get hold of a different DVD.

My friend recently got divorced (yay for me, if you know what i mean!) but the pc was set up by her ex and only he knows the administrator password but hes being an arse and wont give it her. Is there any way of re-setting it without wiping everything?
Thanks
Posted by Cycovision
There is, but it's rather complicated!
Basically, it involves downloading a special Linux boot disk which includes a program that can read and reset encrypted data on NTFS file systems.
Or, in plain English, you download the .iso file, burn it as a bootable CD, pop it in the drive, boot up the computer and follow the instructions!
It's a text-based program rather like the old MSDOS stuff so it's not exactly easy to use.
I'm not even sure if it's still available online but if you want to have a go, PM me and I'll see if I can dig it out for you.
I've only ever had to use it once and it took ages to get it right

Cyco.
I have a HP desktop with 1gb RAM and Vista. It is still under warranty for another 5 months with Tesco (< dad's idea not mine
I want to upgrade either the RAM or the OS without voiding my warranty, possible?
Btw: The box is easy to get into just 1 fat screw
Posted by Cycovision
You'll have to check the small print in the warranty policy because some companies do let you, others don't. So "sorry, I don't know" is the honest answer!

Have you tried turning "Disc at Once" off?
And burning at a lower speed?
Might be worth buying a cleaning disc and putting that through a few times too, if you haven't already.

Cyco, cant find warranty bt I think if i can leave no traces of a RAM upgrade I should be arighty.
Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, you should be fine upgrading the RAM. Packard Bell let you do it without voiding the warranty and they're renowned for being arsey with customers. Amongst other things...

Sorry to keep buggig but what would you recommend more, I ant to upgrade because most of my ram gets eaten by the onboard graphics.
More RAM or a Graphics card?
Posted by Cycovision
Depends how much you've already got in there?
Generally speaking, a 128Mb graphics card with 1Gig of Ram is plenty for XP. For Vista, you ALWAYS need 2Gig for it to run properly regardless of the graphics card

I've only ever had to use it once and it took ages to get it right
Thanks for that. What if we transfered all the files she wanted to keep on to my laptop and then cleared her pc completely. There must be a way to start from fresh without inputtng a pasword, surely?
Posted by Cycovision
Yes, that would be a much easier option
You might have to play around with ownership permissions to get at her stuff before it'll let you copy it over to your laptop but it's pretty easy to do.
After that, just boot up from the windows disk and follow the instructions to do a fresh install, it won't matter if there's an admin password on there.
UNLESS...
You don't mean a BIOS password do you, i.e. you get prompted for a password before windows even starts to load? If so, you'll have to take the laptop apart and either find the CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard (if there is one) or take the CMOS battery out and leave it for a day or two.

Cyco one more question, sorry if it sends you Cyco
Would it be easy to partion my 160gb drive and put XP onit and uninstall it if needed with out leaving a trace?
Posted by Cycovision
If you start with a totally blank hard drive then it's easy, you can use the windows setup disk to partition the drive. If you already have an OS on it, then you'll have to use a third party application like partition magic or such like.

now to clean up my mess
tho my home folder for ubuntu has 308 gigs
is partition magik best?? (ive never used it

Does anyone know why my Lappy won install Ubuntu?
40gb HDD (Upgrading A.S.A.P)
2.4ghz Celeron Processor
768mb RAM.
I installed with alternate CD and installed it, the orange bar filled fully and then the screen when blank and did bugegr all :S
Have now got 'ol XP back (:

It's most likely a graphics driver issue with GNOME Desktop and your laptop's onboard graphics. You could try a different Linux distro like OpenSUSE or Mandriva and select KDE desktop instead of GNOME.
Other than that, it'll probably involve booting into the command line, installing drivers and mucking about with config files. Yuk!
