Hi Cyco

What i consider a bit of an odd one here i have a Toshiba Satellite P100-160 that has a Core2 Duo T5200 @1.6GHZ and this is what it say's in most of the places it is mentioned in the computer.

But and now this is what has me very confused in the Device Manager in processors it is showing as Core2 Duo T7200 @2.0ghz what is is going on? and which report is correct?

Marc

Well, the processor stamp is hardware written so unless you've found a bug in Vista, what it says is likely to be the actual processor that you've got! Either that or they put the wrong stamp in it, manufacturing error maybe?

A common error in Vista is to report CPU speeds lower than they actually are, but I've never heard of it reporting higher speeds so you've most likely somehow got a better processor for your money!

Hi Cyco

If it just said the wrong speed that would be an error but to actually say it is a T7200 instead of a T5200, how could it have an error and correctly identify the wrong chip as well as the speed.

Is there any simple test i could run to identify the correct speed and or which processor it is actually using as i said the only place the information is different is in the Device Manager which i would of thought is reading the chip directly? this really has me baffled.

Marc

Device manager reads driver information rather than hardware information AFAIK but how that works works with a processor I'm not altogether sure.

I guess one way to find out would be to try some benchmarking software like http://www.passmark.com/products/index.htm and see what results it comes up with.

Heres one for you Cyco, what are the advantages of running a server edition of an OS on my pc for my network?

Posted by Cycovision
None, unless you're going to have a lot of other PC's connected to it!

Seriously, the server editions of any OS are better optimised for running multi user services like Exchange mail Server or Apache web server. They also often have extra features like various encryption and communication protocols as standard as well as more advanced control over individual user accounts.

If you just want four or five computers to share files, media and internet access then Vista Home Premium or even XP Pro will more than suffice in the Windows corner. Most distributions of Linux come with full server functionality built in anyway, but again you probably won't use them in a home environment.

In a work environment though, you can see where the multi-user connectivity, extra control and gizmos comes in handy!

Not strictly a PC question but cyco is the man to ask....

I'm looking at buying a server for my house, for data storage, need to rip 1000+ cds.... would it be perfectly feasible to have said server hidden away somewhere with a wifi card in it and stream music to an external source? (ie my mac) can a wifi adhoc network cope with the speed of data needed for music? videos? etc......

Ideally I don't want to run a network cable for it!

Apple time machine?

Posted by fatreg
I can get a 3TB, XP HP server for half the cost of a 1TB time capsule

Posted by thomas93
That sounds good, go for that.

Link?

Wireless G is fine for music and medium quality video (even full DVD quality if you get a good, consistent signal) but it's absolutely useless for HD video or if more than 2 or three users are using it heavily at the same time.

Obviously it's the wireless kit that struggles the most so you need very good quality stuff. My mate (who's installed a few media centres in his time) reckons that the Netgear wireless - N stuff works really well and can cope with HD video.

Posted by thomas93
Ok then, I need a printer preffrebly wireless and NOT lexmark cheapest for ink and the actual machine?

Posted by arien617
If there are any wireless laser's out there, don't you think the cost per sheet from one of those eventually pay for the higher cost of the machine and supplies, Thomas?

Posted by paul101
btw cyco, got my pc fixed... put it into failsafe gnome, messed around and it works!

Posted by thomas93
I dont print enough to justify the cost.

Posted by paul101
best printers are epson... a quid a cartage

Wouldnt a NAS do what you want, rather than a server?
Something like this: Lacie 3TB NAS
Cheaper than a server.

@Jc

Can you get wireless NAS drives? I thought they were still mostly ethernet?

If you can then yeah, might be easier!

Posted by fatreg
Cyco.... seems as though iomega did one back in 2006 but nothing since....

only 1tb too

Posted by jcwhite_uk
@fatreg
I have used the ML110 as we have one at work. OK as a server but does need an operating system. OK if you wanna use Linux as its free. G4 is now discontinued which is why it is cheap but that is ok as there is nothing wrong with that.

@cyco
Not seen one myself yet.

Posted by fatreg
I'd most likely load red hat onto it...or at a push Debian, it really will only be used for data storage but will be written to and from near enough constantly....

maybe I'll plump for the HP then and wifi it up

TA!

The wireless bit makes it a bit tricky, might be cheaper to get a wireles print server for about £100 and then stick your favourite printer on that.

As Paul said, Epson are cheapest for cartridges but personally I prefer the quility of HP.

There's a Brother wireless printer here for a reasonable price but I have no idea how much the caetridges are.

Forget wireless, picked up an adaptor for a £1 good old mum who loves charity shops

Netgear to.

Hey cyco,
i hav problem installing Vista Ultimate Edition on my pc. Da problem occurs after i format da vista partition using XP. When i try booting vista it juz did not work.
Is it true dat vista is usable only once on a single machine?

No, it's not true that you can only install vista once on a single machine, you can reinstall it on one computer as many times as you like.

What happens if you just create the partition in XP (don't format it) and then let vista setup do the formatting?

Bear in mind that if you're using an OEM disk for a branded computer (like dell or Hewlett Packard) then it will definitely be tied and won't work on other computers.

Posted by fatreg
^ unless you have an Asus OEM disk........

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah? That could be handy to know!

Posted by gtreds
I tried ur method but da same prob persists. After loading da files da following msg appears, "windows failed 2 start.A recent hardware or software change might b da cause."
it seems its not booting though i hav set boot priority 4m bios.
I used nForce motherboard. It works fine wen i first instal vista.

Posted by HornyNick
Help! i was messing about with the accessibility options on the login page of my laptop (running vista) i turned on the narrator and magnifier, now i cant turn them off! even if the options are unchecked they still start up when i logon. Its starting to drive me crazy.

does anyone know how to get rid of them?

Cheers.

ive decided i'm gonna install windows 95 on my computer....

I have a cunning plan...

Posted by Danny_BFC
i guess im the one thats going to ask about this plan

Posted by paul101
aha!! you'll just have to wait and see

Posted by paul101
hmmm

ive got windows 95 installed but it keeps freezing

Posted by Cycovision
^^^

Probably because you've installed it on a post-1995 PC!

Posted by Danny_BFC
Paul needs alcohol or something lol

Posted by paul101
ah well, Windows 95 has the best community support system of any operating system! if you ever need help, you just load Microsoft Comic Chat and attach to Dalnet, go into any chat room and ask how to get things done in Windows 95... and the people are so nice and helpful... it only took 5 seconds before someone told me how to fix Windows should anything go wrong, apparently Microsoft has this hidden support utility that you load by going to the MS-DOS Command Prompt and typing "Format C:/", i think I'll try that now!

gonna try windows 98, and then windows ME

Try "format c: /q" instead. You get help a lot quicker then

98 will work alright if you can find all the drivers...

Posted by paul101
ok, gonna set it up to install, go do my papers and then when i'm back write up a review on windows 98 (new thread will be created)

hey peeps friend laptop cant connect to the net she bringing it round later she said everytime she tries to go online a box comes up and says this site is blocked by a content advisor, any ideas while im at work, cheers \

Posted by thomas93
Paulio an M1530?

How much you want for the air?

Posted by Cycovision
1. Check if it's got Mcaffee, Norton Internet security or something similar running. If it has, uninstall them because they are shite and they always end up going wrong eventually. Put avast or AVG on instead.

2. Check Internet Explorer's options. It's unlikely to be the cause of this but check and reset them to default values anyway.

3. Stick Firefox on it and see what happens. If she already uses it, check the plugins.

4. Is she subscribed to some ISP's parental control service or similar? Try connecting through your ISP and see what happens. She might also have some program supplied by her ISP running which is blocking the sites.

5. If none of the above, back her stuff up and reinstall it. But I reckon it's going to be number 1 or 4 that's the problem
