Awwww come on Paul, you know more about bloody computers than I do and you know it
What kind of crashing? Freezing? Error messages? All applications or only some? Random or at certain times? It's important to know 'cos it often indicates whether the problem is hardware or software...
If you get rid of Vista, stick SUSE Linux instead of Ubuntu, much betterer
Posted by paul101
random freezing ie mouse, usb dont work
Posted by Cycovision
Ooooh, Yuk!
Overheating maybe? Restart, go into BIOS and check the temperatures?
Could be memory as well but that more frequently causes restarts rather than freezing.
Also possibly battery / power supply.
If you haven't got anything important or irreplaceable on there, you could always do a clean install of Vista just to make sure it's not a software problem.
But this sounds like it could be a nasty one to me, it might need to be sent off to be looked at

hmmm
overheating? is it likely to occur in more powerful laptops? (its a lenovo thinkpad which i thaught was a good make so....?
software? its vista so maybee sticking expee on it may help?
--------
ah yes, my old laptop (celeron, 256mb ram) i put xubuntu on it and works far better than xp! allot faster!
Posted by Cycovision
Well, yes in a word. More power = more heat. Especially with laptops, if the heatsinks / heatpipes become slightly detached from the CPU and / or other chips, or if the thermal grease dries out, or if the ventilation fans become clogged up with dust or stop working altogether then said chips will get very hot very quickly.
Freezing up is a very common symptom of overheating in any type of computer
Posted by paul101
so is core2duo a rather HOT processor?
gosh, i wish i could just open up my laptop and put more fans in if thats the case
i think i'll do a clean install of xp later on, if no fix, i'll reinstall vista and send it back
anyways i still have my old laptop if i do send it back
Posted by Cycovision
All modern processors get very hot. Even the old 750Mhz CPU's suffered freezing due to heat
You're right though, do a clean install to make sure first if it's not going cause any harm.
Posted by paul101
if it still crashes, i can check the temp inside? what is a normal running temp?
Posted by arien617
Core 2 Duo.. I seem to have about 40 celcius on my iMac.
Posted by Cycovision
45 - 70°C for the processor.
Posted by paul101
installing exppe now
Posted by paul101
windows xp has not crashed (yet)
temp for processor 56oC
any idea when the next version of windows coming out? dont like vista too much
Posted by Trev1982

hi mate i have this laptop http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co[....]s/notebooks/amilo_li_1705.html
can you recomend any parts i can buy to make it any better
thanks
PS i allready have upgraded the ram to 2gb
Posted by Cycovision
@paul
Yeah, as Taz says M$ reckon that it's under development but they haven't set a release date yet. However, they did say that they don't want a repeat of the Vista delays fiasco and so going on their previous release schedules, it should be out in 2009 - 2010. Yeah, right...
@capt
The trouble with laptops, of course, is that you're very limited when it comes to upgrading. Since you've already upped the memory, I guess the only thing you could really do is stick a bigger hard drive in it. The data sheet suggests that the largest capacity drive is 160Gb SATA but it doesn't say whether larger drives are supported or not. I would guess that they are, so you could probably put a 200Gb or 250Gb drive in it.
Only problem is how easily accessible the drive is. In some laptops, it's under a little cover on the bottom (like the memory) whilst on others, it's buried inside requiring some very careful dismantling.

just had a look its easy to get to thanks for the info mate

reinstalled the Google toolbar, but they've changed it, it used to underline my spelling mistakes with a wee red squiggly line but now i have to press a button on the Google toolbar and it highlights the spelling mistakes and then i have to press it AGAIN to take the spell check off again before i can do anything!
THAT'S BLOO*Y USELESS!
I want it back the way it was
ahh yes putting clean install of expee seems to have worked

I thought it always did that? It's firefox that continuously checks spelling, isn't it?

I also had that problem several times...
The only way to remove those reserved COM ports is to plug the device which uses those virtual COM ports, and when they appear in the Hardware Devices view, then you can remove them.

Ok, heres one to test you Cyco,

Cyco,
I got a virus on my PC, so i reinstalled XP and also bought a new 320gb Hard drive for it.
Everythings going smootly but if i have my PC on for 5-6 hours (downloading etc) it freezes up
Also i was just configuring limewire to save straight to the 320gb slave drive and everytime im on Limewire for 5 minutes and the PC freezes.
I booted straight into BIOS and my CPU temp was 50 c. Its a AMD x2 3800+. Cant see that being too hot?
Never had a problem before i got the Harddrive.
Thanks in advance
Posted by paul101
try remove limewire, and reinstall it??

Help! something is killing my hard drives!
A few months ago i had to buy a new hard drive because i had all kinds of problems, windows and some apps froze every 10 minutes or so and even S.M.A.R.T. showed a Bad Hard Disk, Backup and Replace msg.
I bought i new one (the same brand as the old one, not really smart i know) and worked pretty well for the last 2 o 3 months, now apps are frozing again and i get bluescreen errors related to the hard disk. I think that the mainboard could be the one messing my drives. What should I do?
Im working with vista btw

Hello,
I'm looking for a new PC. I only have £300 (could possibly stretch to £350) but all i need is the tower as i'm happy with my monitor keyboard and mouse.
The only real requirements i have are that it comes with vista (pre-installed or not) and has a HDMI output...
I hope you can point me in the right direction.

i speced a base unit for my sisters boyrfriend yesterday....
2.3 ghz intel core duo (4meg cache), 4 gig ddr2 800mhz, nvidia 8600GT pci express, and giabite motherboard able to take a quad core if needed in future
all for £310.... (no hardrive, but you could get 2x 500 gb for under £100....
so for £400 a monster of a machine! well, pretty neat anyway

yer its so cheap to build you own rig nowadays, its getting to the point you buy a component and couple of days later its cheaper where as it used to be weeks or months

I'd be interested to know how to do that too as I have been trying since I got my Desktop in Feb 2006 and it has never worked properly! even less so since I installed Vista on the Desktop!

hi! first post here
i formatted my cousin's dell inspiron 9400 and when i tried to install the drivers again not all of them worked, even though i was using the driver's cd that came bundled with it.
well, i managed to download the missing drivers from the dell's support website. i think im missing the bluetooth drivers. i cant seem to get the bluetooth working on it. i remember i saw the blue light indicator on.
my question is: isnt the bluetooth enabled in this laptop or not?
i even downloaded the Wireless 350 Bluetooth Internal Module and Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR) but not luck

WIRELESSLY.....
any plum with a hole can setup a lan with cables
but you can share external harddrives on wireless networks - enabling you to access the data anywhere (within range)......

lol, no worries
i know you can do this, its just how?!?!?
heehe!
Posted by arien617
Lee,
go into windows media player and it should find all the devices on yer network, wired and wireless.
I can't tell you exactly how right now.. or ever in that case because the lappy's at the repairers and there are no other windows machines other than that.
Someone else?

errr, its a 250 gig hard drive
Posted by Trev1982
Paul do you have the jumper in the wrong position on the hard drive ??
Posted by tranced
well, i think the hd is partitionated. but the other partition was not created hence you dont see it there.
what can you do? get a xp cd and make it boot while restarting, then, as if you were gonna install xp, you will see that there is a partition left(where windows is not installed), you need to create a partition and then restart.
go to my computer and format the new partition.
hope it helps
