I have Mcafee Firewall on both my PC and Laptop, and the settings are both on default. I don't think firewall is a problem, as the pc would be disconnecting aswell?

Posted by brownlad007
ok i remember, i have belkin adapters and there is a utility allowing you to change channels. some channels were strong then others i was told on nearly everyone i could go on the net for just a short while, it would cut off, then resume again. i finnaly found 1 channel that it worked perfectly.

i dont know if this will help you but u never know

Still sounds like there's something running in the background that kicks in whenever the PC is idle. Next step is to Download Process Explorer: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html (download links are right at the bottom of the page)

It's basically a souped up version of Windows' task manager, it shows you exactly what programs are running and how much CPU time they are using in. Run it, press 'CTRL' and 'L' to remove the lower pane and just watch it for a while. See if you can find an app that's taking a lot of processor usage.

The most common cause of a PC restarting itself intermittantly is faulty memory. If the comp has got two sticks of memory in it, try taking one out and see if it rectifies the fault. If it doesn't, take the other one out, replace the first and try again. Obviously, if it's only got one stick in you'll have to try and obtain a stick cheaply from somewhere or take it in to a repair shop.

@KK

brownlad007's suggestion is worth a try, but before you do that, the first thing to check is windows power management options for the wireless card in the laptop.

Right-click on 'my computer' and select 'properties'. Click on the 'Hardware' tab and then click the 'device manager' button. Click on the little plus sign (+) next to 'Network adapters' and find the entry for your wireless card. Right-click on it and select 'properties'.

Now click on the 'power management' tab and uncheck the box that says 'Allow windows to turn off this device to save power'.

See if that makes a difference, if not give us a shout

hi, i am having a problem with my modem which i need sorting, please can somebody help. Well, the problem is that about 80% of the time my modem will not load, It is an Sagem fast 800-840 usb adsl modem. When it is loading a light on the modem itself flashes and when it has loaded it stays lit. It just keeps flashing and reseting before it loads.

Also on screen i some times get a message saying 'insufficient bandwidth' and it says the modem will adjust the bandwidth but it doesnt make a difference.

Does anybody know what the problem may be and how to fix it? iv tried all the obvious like disconnecting and reconnecting, re-installing and updating drivers. thanks very much guys

Posted by Cycovision
First thing would be to (if possible) try different cables, both the USB cable from the modem to the PC and the cable(s) that connect to the phone line.

Then, you'd need to speak to your ISP I think. There could be a problem with your line or the modem itself might be faulty, particularly if it's the ADSL signal light that keeps flashing rather than the power or connected lights (if your modem has them).

If all of that checks out, you might be looking at the dreaded reinstall of the operating system, but speak to your ISP first and explain that you've already tried all of the obvious things.

Right done what you said but still a little confused. See pic and see if you can see if anything is running which i dont need.

It seems strange that when i restart the pc a few times it suddenly works fine.

(thanks for all your help so far)

Aha! look under the third instance of the svchost process, windows update (wuauclt.exe) is running and taking about 30% of your CPU availablility! Try turning automatic updates off and see if it makes a difference.

Click start, control panel, automatic updates and switch it off. You can always download them via http://www.windowsupdate.com at a time that's suitable for you anyway.

This might have just been coincidence, i.e. Windows update was running and using that amount of CPU at the exact time that you took the screeny but even so, it's got to be worth a try.

no that doesnt seem to fix it (still have'nt tired the HD IDE cable yet).

Posted by Cycovision
Hmmm. I can't see anything in your process explorer screeny that shouldn't be there, so maybe it is a hardware problem after all. What are the specs of your computer? Processor, amount of memory etc?

EDIT: Have you rebooted after turning off automatic updates?

original post said it ran sluggish and you just done a fresh install did you format the drive first not just copy over the top?
also check the bios make sure that its set to high performance so the multiplier for the chips running as it should, some times they are set lower?
have you added any other hardware graphics card etc?
the windows update in the task list will be there wether auto updates on or not it sadly still pops up and then disappears after a while
i know you said youd ran anti virus checks and spyware but it might be worth downloading ewido its an anti trojan piece of kit and is very good at getting trojan (not a replacement for the other things but a nice addition)
http://www.ewido.net/en/

Well the problem did first start soon after installing a radeon 9600 (that’s soon after not straight after). But when I did the fresh install (on a formatted HD) I also put in a 9800 pro and took out the stick of 512 ram it came with and stuck in two 512’s. (there’s only 2 slots on the mobo so no issues with which slots they went in).

The pc is (apart from my girlfriends) a 2ghz Emachine branded pc (brought from pc world… yes I know).
Don’t know what the mobo is, 80gb HD, 1024mb ram, 9800pro.

The only thing I thought it might be was the psu (as I had two use extra power for the 9800pro) but would this effect it this way? As its strange that if I restart it a few times it suddenly works like a dream?

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, wuauclt.exe still appears with auto updates off but as you said it shouldn't hang around for long, so maybe that was just coincidence. Besides, on a 2 gig machine with that amount of RAM it shouldn't make a difference anyway, even if it's a Celeron or such like

Does the PC stay sluggish for the entire time that you use it or does it eventually 'settle down'? (without restarting it several times I mean)

Power could be an issue in theory but I seriously doubt it. Usually if you don't give a GPU enough power you get wierd things happening like the PC suddenly restarting itself, rather than slower performance.

Might be worth checking out the AGP aparture size in BIOS and setting it to the same (or higher) value than the amount of memory on your 9800 (256Mb i assume), after loading optimised defaults as Slattery suggested.

Yes stays sluggish all the time (unless restarted a few times )

All getting a bit complicated i'll give it a go tho.

Posted by slattery69
i would definatly download ewido and run a complete scan using that, its free (apart from if you want the guard but the scanner is more than enough at the moment)
this picks stuff up adaware and anti virus often miss

have 1 more problem, i used to be with AOl now have moved to ukonline, and i cant uninstall AOL, it just wont let me, any ideas?

Posted by slattery69
what version of aol is it?
did you try to remove it before putting any files from your new provider on?
also i know it may sound like a silly question but did you try to remove it under add/remove programs and click the uninstall option not the repair that comes up.

Posted by p900 lover
its version 9. and ya i did click remove,

one more thing iv got my nec mouse and when i put the instalation CD i get this error

any ideaS?

Posted by Cycovision
Step 1: Make sure that you have the latest windows updates (Windows installer v3.1 is one of them) www.windowsupdate.com

Step 2: Click start, run and type in 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check that all system files (including windows installer) are intact and correctly registered.

Step three: If you still have no luck, try the suggestions in this M$ knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324516

Can you uninstall anything else, or is it just AOL?

th bloody AOL sw does not allow you to do that, it creats a lock on the modem,

reinstall windows and never use that .... of aol again. :-)

AOL is a bugger to get rid of but it normally lets you uninstall the main browser software OK. It's just the left-overs that you have to fish out manually.

AOL's not as bad as it used to be

Posted by slattery69
yes aol 9 normaly ok i ve taken it of and reinstalled it before and its done it first time.
does leave some crap behind but its not as bad as it use to be.
you havent installed any of the new sp software have you as this could be causing a conflict with aol and maybe the cause.
though if your having problems installing some mouse driver cyco is probably right about making sure your installer is up to date

Can you tell me about telnet?

Posted by govigov
it is the truth, same with the bt yahoo dialer.

Posted by Cycovision
@BlueQuill

I know a few bits and bobs about telnet, what specifically do you want to know?

Posted by BlueQuill
Does it work on ethernet?

Posted by brownlad007
aint telnet a hacking program ?

Posted by BlueQuill
...you can use it to get in a lan over internet

[ This Message was edited by: BlueQuill on 2005-10-19 18:53 ]

Posted by Cycovision
Yes, it can be used with computers utilising any networking technology, ethernet, wifi, even USB and serial connections.

Posted by BlueQuill
Ok...so i have got 2 computers connected in a lan. And i want to telnet them. How to do it?

Posted by Cycovision
Well, for starters the PC that you want to control needs to be set up as a server of some kind that supports domains. Apache web server running on a windows PC for example, or Windows server 2003 configured to network using domains rather than workgroups.

Then you set up the built-in telnet client as per the instructions here:

http://www.aota.net/Telnet/wintelnet.php4

You can't use telnet to control an 'ordinary' PC other a network, there's other stuff out there for doing that!

Posted by BlueQuill
Seems kind of complicated....anyways i will stick to lan....

Ok ive got a problem. I have renamed the albums on some of my tracks using iTunes. However, when i look at the track in "My Music", their albums remain the same as before. This is a problem for when i use dic2phone as the albums are wrong.

So what do i need to do?

Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks

Posted by Cycovision
I'm assuming that you're right-clicking on the tracks, selecting 'get info' and changing the titles etc. in there?

I-tunes only updates the IDV3 tag information, not the actual filename of the music file itself. I you want to change the way your music is named when you look in 'My Music', you need to right-click on the music file (directly in 'My Music', not in I-Tunes), select 'rename' from the pop-u menu, then type in whatever you want the file to be called, eg 'Nirvana - Nevermind - Smells Like Teen Spirit'

Yeah thats how I used iTunes. Its no the name thats the problem its the actual album name in the "My Music" folder. It says name, artist, album etc. Ill try and get a screenshot in a sec.

edit: done a screeny!

Ahhh right!

It's probably because Windows is using a different tagging system to Itunes.

You could try downloading winamp if you haven't already got it, www.winamp.com, and using that to edit the tags instead. It offers much more flexibility than I-Tunes as you'll see when you start playing with it!

Failing that, do a google for 'free mp3 id tag editor' or similar. That's the root of your problems, you need to be able to fully edit the tags rather than the limited editing options that I-Tunes gives

I'd like to thank Cyco for his quick response in my question about japanese textsupport. I managed to fix it myself after some mixturing so it's okey now.

I think i download a virus off limewire.

Basically now limewire opens when i log on, i close it and it just opens up again, i've unistalled it now, but now every 5 mins it comes with error message in sum java box saying send this error to bugs@limewire.com and now i can't do control-alt-del nothing happens

what shud ido , i've scanned wit avg nothing

Posted by Cycovision
It's left some of itself there after you uninstalled it, and one or more of the files gets started automatically everytime you switch on the PC.

You're going to have to download hijack this - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Run it, click OK to all of the warnings then click 'do a system scan and save logfile.

Paste the logfile here (it's just a text file) and I'll tell you what to do next.

I know it's a pain but it's the only propper way to sort this problem out. You could use msconfig to take the offending items out too, but this the PROPER way to sort it out for good

Right, you need to restart the computer in safe mode (restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key until you get the windows advanced start up menu) and then run hijack this again.

Then, tick the little boxes on the left of the screen next to each of the following:

O4 - HKLM..Run: [winupdates] C:Program Fileswinupdateswinupdates.exe /auto
O4 - HKLM..RunServices: [Microsoft Update] wuamgrd.exe
O4 - HKLM..RunServices: [WindowsRegKeys update] winsysi.exe
O4 - HKCU..Run: [WindowsRegKeys update] winsysi.exe
O4 - HKCU..Run: [Microsoft Update] wuamgrd.exe

All of these are caused by a strain of the Agobot worm and might well be what's causing the problem. Even if it's not, you don't want it on there anyway!

Once you've ticked them, click the 'fix checked button', then click the 'scan' button again and make sure they've gone. Then, close hijack this and restart the PC normally.

I'm still at work at the minute and so I haven't checked your hijack this log thoroughly, I'll have a propper look when I get home
