Do you think he will go mad at me for creating this, he might get bombarded and blame me

Oops!!!

Posted by Cycovision
No I don't mind at all, it's a great idea Miss C! We'll just have to bumpety-bump it every now and then or it'll get lost in the Esato quagmire

@cyco...lemme inaugurate your new thread with a query....Is it possible to replace the onboard graphics on a laptop with a different AGP card?? Say for example....an Intel 82815 graphocs controller with 64 MB Vid RAM...can it be replaced with an ATI Radeon 128 MB card

And congratulations on your very own thread

Thanks mrao

The simple answer is no, I'm afraid. Some of the newer laptops by Alienware and Dell do have the facility to replace the GPU but it is still not a job you can do yourself at home like with a desktop PC

Hmm....I guess I was being a bit too optimistic....though I guessed it would be as you said......thanks anyway...I guess its time to put this one up on ebay

Hi cyco, I have to help this thread along. I have a re-ocuring problem with itunes. Basically every time I open it an error message (do you want to send a report to microsoft one) then when you click ok or no it closes itunes. So far I have tried re starting my pc, uploading the latest version, uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing the current one. I also downgraded to the earliest I could find, then upgraded it, this fixed the problem for a day, now the error keeps on coming back.
This wouldnt usually bother me except I cant upload new music to my ipod, can you help me?

hopefully this can be done,

at the moment iv got a pc with an 8mb conection. i get my internet from a wifi router that conects 2 my pc via an ethernet cable,

i want to get a mac mini and conect it to the same monitor and same internet conection that i have at the moment.

regarding the internet am i right in thinking that if my mac mini has an airport card i can just conect to my wifi network?
or is it not as simple as this?

but with regard 2 sharing a monitor i have no idea

thanks 4 your help
Dan

Posted by masseur
the wifi connection will work as they all use the same 802.11b/g standard

not sure about the monitor thing though I vaguelly recall JoolsG4 mentioning that only an adaptor is required

perhaps we also need a "JoolsG4 - mac help thread"

Posted by max99
if i go into my documents and right click on a picture or folder etc

this comes up

i then click cancel , cancel etc and it eventually comes up with the menu to copy cut etc

how can i stop this, i dn't have the disc to install the program and i've removed the program from the program list

HELP its soo annoying

Posted by Cycovision
@p900 lover

Yes, a mac compatable wifi card is all you need to share your internet connection.

As for sharing the same monitor, you're lucky in that you're looking to get a mac mini! They use the standard D plug vga connector which means you can use a USB KVM switch. This is just a little box that allows you to connect multiple computers to a single monitor, keyboard and mouse (KVM = Keyboard, Video and Mouse).

More info on these here:

http://www.networktechinc.com/

@Masseur

Yes, JoolsG4 should have a help thread too, macs aren't my forte and the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned, I don't claim to know everything about PC's, obviously, and I'd very much appreciate other peoples help in this thread as well

@lukebonathan

I hate to say it, and this is seen as defeat to us computer geeks(!) but I think you may be looking at a reinstall of the operating sytem. Basically, you've tried pretty much everything I would suggest so the next step for me would be to back up all my important files, wipe the PC clean and start all over again

Not the answer you wanted to hear no doubt, but it's the most likely way to get your itunes working, I'm afraid

A mac would be great

Posted by Cycovision
@max

Sounds like you've got a 'extra context menu' that's linked to program that doesn't exist on your PC at the minute...

Two ways to hit this one:

1. Have you got a scanner? If so, the disk it's asking for might be your scanner driver CD. Try putting that in, and if it still doesn't work, put the disk in normally and see if there's a progrm called 'omnipage' on it. It's an optical character recognition app for scanners that is often bundled with the scanner itself. Install it, then uninstall it from add/remove programs if you don't want it on there. If you can't can't find the omniscan prog, then...

2. Download this program, 'hijack this' - http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Run it, click 'ok' on the warnings, and select 'run a system scan and create log report'

Copy and paste the log report here (it's a text file), and we can take it from there

thanks a lot, so if i get a mac mini that comes with a wife built in thats all i need?

what speeds could i get on the mac min, is there a limit on the amount wifi can send?

Posted by Cycovision
Yup, built in wifi would be fine

802.11b supports a maximum transfer speed of 11mbps, 802.11g supports up to 54mpbs so both would be fine for your 8mbps broadband.

Posted by p900 lover
thanks a lot, 1 more question.
at the moment the router is in my bedroom, i want to move it to the hallway of my house so that the signal is better,

A) is it possible to get a longer, about 15 meter etherent cable and a the cable that conects to my phone line?
and
B) if it is possible will the extra about of cable slow down my internet conection?

thanks so much

Posted by mrao
hehe....@p900lover....id sure like a mac mini with a wife built in

Posted by Cycovision
@p900 lover

Yes, you can get made-up CAT5 ethernet cables in various lengths, the longest ready-made one I've ever seen is 30m but I'm sure you can get longer. Likewise, you can get ADSL phone cables in a similar range of lengths.

It is true that your connection speeds suffer when using longer cables but as long as you buy decent quality cables and / or connectors and you use the shortest possible lengths of cables, it's doubtfull that you'll notice an appreciable difference in performance.

isnt an airport extreme card wifi?

http://store.apple.com/Apple/[....]L5K98Tv122aRkB82tZ8G6RX/6.?p=0

Posted by Cycovision
Yes, the airport extreme is a wifi adapter and will work with a standard wireless router

Posted by zMastaa
@p900

a longer ethernet cable wont slow it down but a longer cable from the router to your wall will slow it down (but not by much, it can create alot of noise on the connection if u use a low grade wire, as i found out the hard way!)

Posted by p900 lover
@zMastaa

any cables what you would recomend?

Posted by zMastaa
i dont know for me it was a hit and miss

btw i am NOT takling about etherent cables just to clarify that point

Hey, I have a question:

I'm using my Compaq Laptop via Wifi but dont know how to connect to my printer wirelessly.

Previously I ran a cable from the USB port on the laptop to the square connector on the printer (Canon Pixma iP 3000). Do I now connect the printer to the router? The router doesn't have a USB port, do I need a new cable?

Help?!?

Posted by Cycovision
Nope, you probably need a new printer!

Basically, you need a printer with built in network printing capability. If your printer has an ethernet (network) connector then you can connect it to your wireless router with a standard cat5 network cable.

If it doesn't, one alternative would be to buy the cheapest second hand PC you can find, stick it on the wireless network and install the printer on that using the USB cable as normal.

Other than that, you're stuck with having it wired up to your laptop

Posted by carkitter
Hmmm... I knew I should have spent a bit more on a printer

Thanks for the prompt reply.

hey, im kinda bored and want to see how powerfull my pc is,
are there any sites or programs that i can benchmark it or sumthing, and maybe do sum other test like fan speed,

sorry if this is stupid but im wondering,
thanks
dan

Posted by Cycovision
Not stupid at all!

http://www.futuremark.com/products/

These guys offer a range of benchmarking programs. 3dMark '01, 3dMark 03 and PCMark '04 are must-haves, the demos are limited but still give you a pretty good idea of what your PC is capable of. I wouldn't bother with 3dMark '05. Even dual-core systems with SLI graphics score poorly with that, it's just rediculously demanding on your PC!

http://download.guru3d.com/aquamark3/

Aquamark 3 is another well known benchmarking app, and quite pretty to watch if your PC is up to running it properly.

Posted by dude_se
my pc used to switch off automatically but now doesnt. it will either say "it is now safe to turn off your computer" instead of switching off automatically or it will make a noise as if its switched off and the modem, etc.. will go off but the pc will still be on. i have got apm on btw. also sometimes my pc screen will sometimes go blank then come back on and the display will be set to the lowest and it would be all messed up. if you restart it would be back to normal and an error report comes up and says it has something to do with the 3dfx banshee drivers even though i think i found a updated one. can you help?

dude_se

Posted by Cycovision
Have you tried a different graphics card? I'm not being funny, but if you're running a banshee card it must be pretty old by now and they do pack up!

Posted by dude_se
the only other graphics card i have is in my old computer which has 200mhz, 32mb ram and i think the graphics card is 4 or 8mb and my banshee is 16mb. if i use the old one wont my pc display look bad?

dude_se

Posted by p900 lover
3DMark05 Build 1.2.0 (Full Version) is 283 mb, is that file size right?

also should i noit be running anything else?

Posted by Cycovision
Depends on your monitor, but you should still get at least 800x600 with that old card. You will need to download the drivers for it though, unless you're running Windows ME or XP in which case the OS probably supports it natively anyway.

It's just worth trying it to see if it is your banshee card. If the PC's ok with your old card, you'll know that you need a new card and you can get a slightly better one. There's 128Mb Geforce FX5200 cards out there for about 30 quid.

well i will get a new computer next year hopefully so dont want to spend money on upgrades. i will try the old card tomorrow or friday. feel really bad at the moment so ill do it later. i am running xp so i recon the old card will work but im just worries that the graphics (displaying photos and stuff) will look bad.

dude_se

Posted by Cycovision
Nah, even 4 meg cards were capable of 16 bit colour depth which produces very near photo quality.

Posted by dude_se
it goes to 24 bit on my old pc and this pc has 32 bit. so should be ok.

i need help, my volume goes up and down on its own

Posted by blayv
What volume? If it's wave volume it's possible some game or app is changing it. If winamp volume goes up-down it may be cause you're holding mobile close to mouse or keypad.

Posted by solidsingh
no software settings change, i think its a hardware defect because the volume control is a separate unit

Posted by blayv
What volume control are you talking about? The one you get when you click on 'sound' icon in system tray/control panel? Or you mean volume control on your speakers/amplifier? Please clarify.

Posted by Cycovision
Have you tried a different amplifier or set of speakers? If the volume cuts immediately from high to low to high to low etc. then it's usually a dodgy cable. Have you tried gently moving the wires and plugs about to see if it effects the volume?

Posted by solidsingh
yeh when i even touch the volume control, it changes

Posted by Cycovision
Sounds like you need a new pair of speakers, I'm afraid
