Panasonic GD87.......release date?

Anyone know when the Panasonic GD87 is getting a release? Especially in the uk. This phone really does look fantastic, built in camera, nice slim clamshell design with a 65K screen and Poly tones. The websites say its the flagship model for 2002, so it can't be long before it comes out! I think this could seriously be my next phone.

Posted by kogos
they told me in a vodafone store in cardiff that it will be available end of september... they didn't know about the price though

Posted by riflogic
Yeah I am seriously considering this one as well if the P800 gets delayed which I think will.

Posted by New Beetle
Yeah, looks really cool, and I feel that the phone would suit me more than The Nokia 7650 or the SE P800, its more of a "phone" than a palm cum phone. I was wondering about pricing too, Panasonic phones aren't really known as expensive so lets hope it comes in at a sub £200 price point on contract.

My feelings towards my T68 have been dropping for a while now, the screen kinda annoys me with its pale colours, and its all too quickly becoming dated. 65K screens look sooooo nice.

Guys, you got to read this... http://www.threegmobile.net/gallery/panasonicgd87/index.html
I think it's a great phone, but the camera resulotion is very poor...

Posted by panda
Orange will be releasing GD87 in October at 199 pounds with a contract. (www.what-cellphone.com)

Regarding the resolution of the camera, it is 110 k pixels.
Compare this with:

Nokia 7650 - 310 k pixels
SonyEricsson Communican MCA20 - 310 k pixels
Sharp GX-1 (to be released from O2) - 110 k pixels

Now these figures look miserable compared to proper digital cameras which offer something like 3.3 M pixels resolution.
Camera phones will not replace digital cameras anyway, it is only used as an accessory for a mobile phone. i.e. just for fun. So we have to compromise on resolution.

Even camera phones in Japan have either 110 k or 310 k pixels resolution and people are satisfied with them.

Posted by kogos
great phone. i will surely get it... it;s better than p800 and 7650 if you ask me because if the size... and i hope it won't be too expensive. any news on GD 89???

Posted by New Beetle
E-mailed Orange UK about GD87 and in good old orange fashion they will probably say that the handset is being tested and cannot give a firm release date.

Anyway will let you all know if I get a reply

It's not primarily resolution that is the problem, it's the quality of the pictures. 640x480 is enough but the QUALITY sucks. There are cheap digi-cams that support like 1600x1200 but they are just toys because the quality sucks.

Posted by New Beetle
Surely these cameras on phones are not meant for serious photo's? I think you miss the point. Its about spur of the moment fun snapshots to send tyo your friends and family? I wouldn't have thought anyone would actually expect the built in cameras to perform like a stand alone camera? We have cameras for than

Posted by jucame
I for sure gonna get one if all that is true about this mobile, enough for fun that camera there, and Panasonic mobiles are great, if battery life is enough that´s my new mobile, I hate PDA and lookalikes I`ll wait for a test though.

I just want to say that this phone is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I think I'll forget P800 and get this one... and it will probably be released first! and cheaper!
If you have any other news on this lovely gh87/88 just drop me a line! =)

I noticed these questions from an FAQ with a panasonic spokesman on www.threegmobile.net
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How many MMS message can be stored in GD87 / 88?
A: It depends on the number of pictures and video clips you have stored in the phone. If you only store MMS messages it can store probably around 30 messages.

Q: Can we attach pictures or video clips to that we take the built-in camera?
A: You can attach pictures to the MMS, but at the initial stage of MMS, the service is not capable of attaching video clips to it. However certain motion pictures can be attached to the messages.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Does this mean the GD87 can record video clips? Can anyone confirm this?

Posted by lmi
I don't think it can record video but it seems it can play it... although I cant see how because I don't think it will have a memory card!... I wish it had... if it had I'd surely buy it... although I like it a lot! and it should have mp3 player too!

HOLY SH!T, this is the phone I will get

I so will get this once it come out

Hopefully it comes out before i go back in Canada so I can use it there!!! I can now replace my T68 with this gem... he he he

I never wanted p800, 3650 or 6650 because of the design and this new one from panasonic just rocks!!!!

Let's keep this thread alive for more information.

I am sure this one has an SMS alert tone loud

Anyways, guys how were previous Panasonic phones when speed is concerned?? Cause one thing i dont like in T68 is it lags a lot unlike Nokia. How's panasonic on that matter?

Posted by riflogic
Actually I am wondering whats the user interface is like in Panasonic phones??

Posted by riflogic
By the way it is missing Bluetooth and an Infra-red port so it will be annoying exchanging data as data cable is the only option available. Further more, no GSM 1900 band.

Posted by jucame

Posted by orang3
by the way does it come with a mem slot ?

Posted by jucame
also it has IRDA and triband, modem, etc.

Posted by markboyce
It will be released on Orange in October for around £199.99

Posted by riflogic
Ok, some websites are saying its tri-band and has got IrDA functionality, whereas other websites say that these are missing. Its confusing.

Posted by lmi
I guess we'll have to wait for the official release

Posted by casperr
Didnt know it is missing bluetooth. Hope they include this but then if not, mmm i dont know if i will buy this. But if the user interface is good, better than SE then I will still get it.

Posted by levinlam
GD 87 / 88 does not have bluetooth! as for infra = unknown still! confirmed!

Went to the communicasia 2002 show and played with it already, it has everything except bluetooth.

GD88 is triband definitely! with 16 polyphonic. But camera is lousy only 110K pixel! therefore the MCA - 20 is three times better than the camera of GD 88! but of course you can see damm nice pictures on GD 88 due to TFT LCD 65K colors. but if you send it for printing, it sucks big time!

Get the GD88 if you dont have much data to transfer but if you do, suggest you stick to your T68i!

You have held one? Hows it speed? Is it fast like nokia or does it lag a lot like t68? I read somewhere samsung is gonna release somethng better again, i dnt know why i am into flip phones so much these days :-l

Posted by salonikat68
NO YES IR
and all panasonics i've had (G600,GD90,GD93,-a friend's GD75,GD35)
were faster enough in menus from T68i

Posted by jucame
Triband all i worried,I do not care for bluetooth really that much, not this year maybe in 2003, the cam is only little fun I will use it from time to time for MMS jokes, for quality pics I have a 4.0 Sony PC9, so I think GD87 will be my next mobile for sure

This is from the GD87 press release on http://www.panasonicmobile.com/frame/e_eng.html

"For the business user there is support for GPRS enabling faster data download speeds with a virtually permanent connection to the network and there is also SyncML for synchronising your phone with your PC or PDA via an infrared facility."

Here is Samsungs effort, the V200. They say it will be out by December.
http://www.telefonino.net/cgi-bin/news.asp?n=6836

Or if you are a Vodafone user, they will have the Sharp GX10 available from October 25th. The only pics I have found are from russian websites. Its the clamshell phone on the webpages.

http://www.compulenta.ru/2002/3/18/26884/

http://www.ferra.ru/news/2002/3/18/19163/

It has MMS, 65k TFT, camera, and Java. It is exclusive to Voda networks worldwide. As some of you may know, Sharp make the most popular camera phones in Japan.

http://www.sharp.co.jp/products/menu/joho/cellular/index.html

And all MMS usage on Vodafone (in the UK) will be free until Jan 31st 2003!!

Thats what I've been told by Voda customer services. He said thast at the moment their billing system can't tell the difference between normal GPRS usage and sending/receiving MMS using GPRS, so it had to be free until they work that out.

Apparently you will be able to try out MMS and Vodafone Live, the new consumer Wap service, from tomorrow in Voda stores in and around the UK.

Any news on GD87 around the world, I am waiting for one.

You might think I am crazy, but I really don't like the clambshell design in mobile phones. I admit it has the advantage of protecting the screen from scratches, but I really don't like it. The best design, to me, is like the t39 (used to have a t18 and was so good from that point of view) and also the P800.
So I will not buy a multi-screen, always-open-before-you-answer clambshell phone

Posted by lmi
I, some time ago (not so much time), also didn't like this type of phones. But now, given the huge size phones can have, and since this is practical and saving space, I'm starting to like them a lot! The 1st I really liked was samsung T100 for it's design!! unfortunately, as everyone knows, it has almost 0 (zero!) features... what a pity!.. Let's see this Panasonic GD 87

Posted by yapliren
it have far less memory then t68. for us t68 memory is still consider as "enough" for normal storage without using MMS. http://threegmobile.net said that it have only 500k of memory only. further more this phone have camera function which require the photo store in the phone. The memory is a big disadvantage

Posted by orang3
does it come with mem slot ?

Posted by jucame
Pinolo> in new calmshell mobiles you do not necesary open to answer anymore, they all have now one screen outside to see who is calling plus you can personalice your GD87 with diferent ringtones to see and hear who is calling before opening, superplus it has speaker for handsfree answering so you keep your screen nice and safe

Posted by mhorton
That looks really nice for a flip phone.

Posted by orang3
