I've just bought a Nokia 6310i (off Ebay!) which supposedly had some kind of fault with the Bluetooth on it, but so far haven't gotten as far as testing that as I've got a worse problem. When I powered it on with a sim in, there was no signal. I've tried this with another network's sim in with the same problem. It says 'No network coverage', and doing a manual network search brings the same error message. It has firmware verson 7.00 dated Nov 04, so it's a pretty up to date software version.
I know this is a common problem, and I've heard somewhere that it can be fixed by soldering a piece of wire across the contacts for the external aerial connector on the back (for things like car kits, etc.)
Has anyone tried this, does it really work?

hey mate if you've tried all the sims in there, and still no luck... you may have purchased a blocked phone. Just make sure the ariel isn't faulty and to try it in different locations to find out for sure.
Also what sort of bluetooth problem? i have one on mine, you can't turn bluetooth on/off, or change any of the settings in the bluetooth menu.

Occasionally the chip responsible for network detection, signal, etc goes faulty from liquid damage... And when it's repaired, the flux and heat used may loosen the track surrounding it, thus signal probz. (according to a mate who repairs em...)

The phone's not blocked, it's not even getting a signal to give me the 'sim card registration failed' error message.
The seller said that the phone was tested with a Vodafone sim, which I don't one of which (I've currently only got an Orange and O2 sim). I might see if I can get hold of a Voda sim to try it in there.
I've tried unlocking the phone with a code generator, though i think it's unlocked anyway, as it's not throwing up error messages like 'insert correct sim card', and I can navigate all the menus and things.

"If" the phone is stolen, the IMEI might be on a blacklist (phone is barred) and you cannot register on the network. If the external antenna is defective, you could still get a little signal. If there is a simlock on the phone, it would give a message like: insert correct sim.

I don't think it's even registering with any network. I'm not getting any error messages when putting different sims in, so I think it's unlocked. This is why I suspect it's this external aerial connector problem, though it could of course be a software problem - though it's got a fairly recent firmware version on it.

A little update....
Tried putting a Voda sim in (borrowed of the GF's dad), it powered up, and hey presto, a signal!
Tried an Orange sim in it, it got a signal for 5 mins, then it disappeared again
A couple of attempts later, the signal came back and it hasn't gone away.... yet. Even works with my O2 sim! I still don't trust it though, but will see how it goes over the next couple of days.
Strange though how it refused to get a signal until I put a Voda sim in, then away it went - any ideas what's going on there? Or was it just coincidence?

it probably is coincidence- either internal antenna or some chip pad has bad connection to the board, and everytime you move phone around, it gets better or worse, and so does the signal- i'm 90 percent sure it's a hardware problem, and has nothing to do with sim or sw. (the same thing happened to my mate, soldering the connection solved it. be carefull, if you don't have appropriate equipment you can burn chips or board while soldering!)
