The see-thru has been in linux for a loooong time, so why don't you switch to linux?

Transparency, drop shadows and other effects have been in Mac OS X for years! S'funny people are getting excited by this!!

From eWeek:

"When Windows Vista ships in late 2006, Windows will mimic many features of Apple's Tiger and go beyond it.

With the first Vista beta, Microsoft seems to have taken many cues from Mac OS X with the user interface and features, right down to some of the terminology.

Even some of Vista's icons are amazingly similar to those in Tiger.

For instance, there's the interface names, Apple's Aqua and Microsoft's Aero.

In Vista, "My Documents" and "My Computer" are now "Computer" and "Documents," as they are in Mac OS X.

The search icon in the Vista beta is almost identical to Tiger's Spotlight icon, except that the magnifying glass turns the other way.

Vista buttons and other interface details have a shiny bulbous look similar to those in Mac OS X.

The more-advanced Aero Glass option uses translucent window title bars, a handy feature of Mac OS X that Apple dropped with Panther, but is still used in the Dock.

Many of Vista's file management features will be familiar to Tiger users, but Vista goes further in file management techniques.

Vista folder windows have a search-as-you-type search field, a feature that Mac OS X has had since Jaguar in 2002, but which became dramatically faster in Tiger with the Spotlight search engine.

Vista also borrows Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger's Smart folders, calling them Virtual Folders. This feature automatically creates shortcut files based on criteria set by the user and places them in a folder. (Tiger's Smart Folder does this with aliases.)

One of the useful features that Mac OS X has always had is that PDF is built into its core.

PDF is used for displaying and printing files, and Mac OS X has the ability to turn any document created by any application into a PDF file.

With Windows Vista, Microsoft will attempt to do the same, but not with PDF.

Vista will use a new universal format called Metro, based on XML, for viewing and printing files. The aim is consistency of documents on screen and in print.

This is something that Mac OS has always been superior to Windows, even before Mac OS X. It remains to be seen how successful Metro will be."

Graphic effects have been arond for a looooong time. Things like windowshade for mac, (started out as a third party utility anyhow) hell back to blitter filled backdrops on the amiga.

Though:

Even some of Vista's icons are amazingly similar to those in Tiger.

Iirc didn't XP share an artist in common with OS X ?

Vista buttons and other interface details have a shiny bulbous look similar to those in Mac OS X.

Actually they look just as over shaded and bulbous as they do in XP, yet more stretched. Never been a fan of the XP buttons either.

Vista folder windows have a search-as-you-type search field, a feature that Mac OS X has had since Jaguar in 2002, but which became dramatically faster in Tiger with the Spotlight search engine.

Likewise this can also be a logical extention of the indexing services that were introduced earlier.

As for the whole PDF/metro thing.. We'll it'd be nice if MS used a standard for once but they kinda prefer to make their own. one reason I stay away from wm*.

Each new os that comes out is going to share alot of things in common with competitors OS's, that's just the way it goes. I do think that mac users need to get over the whole "we release it all you just copy it" mentality though. Isn't there an article like this everytime a new version comes out? The software industry is anything but original.

@trogdor:
There'll be no ridicule without cheap MS paint or photoshopped interpretations first!

actually, making it look like the others isn't necessarily such a bad move. it probably won't persuade any macolites to use windows, but it may stop your average pc user migrating to mac because "it's all the same thing anyway".

never going to use linux and mac.. SO i really want to see Vista

Posted by Cornholio_666
isn't that how the windows gui came about, by copying apple?

Posted by Gigs
.. which in turn is also based/copied off the work done at parc xerox who came up with the WIMP model. (Windows, Icons, Mouse, Pointer)

IIRC the Apple lisa was the first to make it publicly available in the form of a "home" computer but in no way invented the concept. But that was along time ago and many computer companies came along and innovated since that time.

Looks like Microsoft are keeping things nice and simple for Vista purchasers by providing SEVEN confusingly different versions to choose from:

  • Windows Vista Starter Edition
  • Windows Vista Home Basic Edition
  • Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
  • Windows Vista Ultimate Edition
  • Windows Vista Small Business Edition
  • Windows Vista Professional Edition
  • Windows Vista Enterprise Edition

How many average punters are gonna know which version they should be running, even after digesting all the product specs?

Also, Microsoft have just unveiled their latest copycat feature for Vista - Microsoft Gadgets. Which are basically Mac OS X Dashboard Widgets or Konfabulator Widgets in all but name.

    Posted by Gigs
Or sysmetrix or any one of a hundred different bars that all report back on similar things that allow adding of drive space, email indicators, weather information, built in player buttons, cloks, email readers, virtual desktops, the list goes on.. They've been around for along time.

If you're going to suggest they're purely copying, why not just show apple invented in the first place.. Or did they mearly bundle someone elses shareware idea as well.

To be honest, I'll probably still use sysmetrix.

    Posted by Johnex
    Ok, have it now

    Posted by leeboy13
    im getting it

Can anyone give us all some info on its pro's and con's?

    Cheers johnex

    Pros:

    - More attractive UI
    - Virtual Folders for better organisation of files
    - Faster, more accurate search facilities
    - Integrated third party plug-ins for better customisation and usability
    - Better multi-tasking capability, including previews of running apps on the taskbar
    - More stable than XP and better error logging and recovery when things do go wrong.

    Cons:

    - You need a pretty decent PC to get the most from it
    - Too many different versions. If you want the full bells and whistles version, it 'aint gonna be cheap!
    - It currently takes bloody ages to install!

That's what I've found with the various beta versions I've been testing so far, It's pretty close to the release version now but there's still lots of other goodies that aren't working properly yet.

I like the speed it has on startup, and also the way that the new file manager works, in the case that you get 3d icons for the folder preview:

and also browsing with the alt tab:

as well as the speed of searching, and the new programs, ie 7.
